Deeper into anonymity: Linux Tails

in #tails6 years ago (edited)

Understanding the peculiarity of Linux Tails is as simple as revealing the abbreviation. Yes "Tails" is an abbreviation - The Amnesic Incognito Live System.
Let's go through all the words...

TAILS

1) Live System

Tails is designed to be installed on a USB stick or DVD so that it can be started on almost any computer. So you don't need to install it on your notebook and use as an everyday operation system. Just plug-in USB stick and boot the system when you need it.

2) Incognito

The main feature of Tails is that it provides a high-level anonymity out of the box. It works through the Tor network by default, uses encrypted email agent, every software you use is configured to prevent any data leak. Tails is based on Debian Linux and uses only open source software, which is very important as any attempt to track users by developers can be easily spotted.

3) Amnesic

No data will be saved on the system until you want to. All the files out of persistent volume, usage logs and browser history, everything will be irretrievably removed after the session is over (shutdown, reboot or unplug USB).

Getting starting

At first, I wanted to post a tutorial of creation Tails live USB, but then noticed that the developers were generous enough and provided a fairly simple step-by-step tutorial:

Warning

Tails is an awesome tool which provides a high level of technical anonymity, but it won't protect you from yourself. As they mention in their official documentation Tails won't magically separate your different contextual identities or make your crappy passwords stronger :)
So you still shouldn't be lazy and be careful.

Anonymous economics

Tails comes with an Electrum Bitcoin wallet preinstalled by default, but as they mention Bitcoin is not anonymous. Tails team suggests to use the different wallet for every transaction, but your finances can still be tracked since the blockchain is public, and you have to top up your new wallet before using it. If possible you should consider using more anonymous cryptocurrency rather than bitcoin.

I would suggest using DeepOnion as a fast, simple and anonymous cryptocurrency since it's integrated with Tor by default there are lower chances to get compromised by negligence, even if you use the same wallet on your everyday OS.
To install ONION wallet on Tails simply follow the tutorial provided by one of the community members:

Ok, seems like I'm done :)
