En el norte de Portugal hay una ciudad junto al mar y a los pies del Monte de Santa Lucía.

Viana do Castelo merece ser visitada y que gastemos en ella, al menos, un día. Os contaré porqué.

Tuvimos ocasión de visitarla este verano y de inmediato nos cautivó, sobretodo, por sus encantadoras y pequeñas callejuelas que se encuentran en el centro histórico de la ciudad.

El núcleo central está muy bien conservado y lo encontramos entorno a la Plaza de la República donde hay una bonita fuente que me recuerda a las canarias. En esta plaza está el Ayuntamiento y la maravillosa Iglesia de la Misericordia.

Vale la pena visitar despacio esta iglesia y admirar sus maravillosos murales de azulejos. También son muy bonitos los artesonados dorados y con figura talladas que son un derroche de ternura.

Este año, mientras hacíamos el Camino de Santiago, tuvimos ocasión de visitar la Iglesia de la Misericordia. Es una visita imprescindible. No me extenderé en ella porque hace unos días os la describí ya que esconde una extraña curiosidad. Aquí os dejo el enlace El misterio del azulejo equivocado

Muy cerca de la Plaza de la República está la Catedral de Viana do Castelo que es una iglesia-fortaleza construida en el siglo XV. Es un edificio de aspecto robusto por su función defensiva y por ello cuenta con dos torres almenadas desde donde disparar, si fuera preciso.

En aquella época, las iglesias de los lugares de costa servían también como lugar para resguardarse y fortalecerse ante el ataque de los piratas u otros enemigos. Esto mismo sucede, por ejemplo, en Oporto cuya catedral también es una iglesia-fortaleza.

La Catedral se construyó en la primera mitad del siglo XV y se hizo estilo gótico. Es un templo con la planta de cruz latina y está clasificado de “interés público”.

De la Catedral, sobretodo me entusiasmó el Pórtico porque es de estilo gótico y porque se ha conservado muy bien. Sobre él está un magnífico Rosetón central que da luz al interior.

El Pórtico tiene las figuras de seis apóstoles y una arquivolta coronada en su punto más alto por Cristo Rey acompañado por ángeles y músicos que están a sus lados.

Los apóstoles representados son: San Pedro, Santiago Apóstol, San Pablo, San Juan, San Bartolomé y San Esteban. Son reconocibles por los objetos que portan. En el próximo artículo prometo explicar como podemos reconocer fácilmente a cada uno.

Cuando entramos al interior de la Catedral nos llamó la atención por su sobriedad. Esto es debido a que sufrió dos grandes incendios y simplemente se encuentra restaurado. Los techos están decorados con un trampantojo en la escala de grises.

Sin lugar a dudas, lo que mas me llamó la atención fue una pequeña sepultura de un noble local. La lápida está dispuesta junto a una pequeña ventana que la ilumina y le da un aspecto mágico.

Está datada en el año 1404 y está decorada con símbolos astronómicos. Se piensa que su origen proviene de otras capillas anteriores que erigieron los caballeros de órdenes marineras. Posteriormente fue recolocada aquí. Esta capilla fue motivo de una publicación propia anterior El caballero olvidado

Junto a esta lápida hay una pila bautismal medieval en la que han esculpido motivos astronómicos en la piedra. Me gustó mucho por su simplicidad y rudeza.

Tras la Catedral, un buen plan es visitar el Museo del traje. Aquí están expuestos diversos trajes regionales de la zona. Hay algunos muy originales y bien conservados.

Los trajes de ocasiones importantes se adornaban de filigranas. En Viana do Castelo se confeccionan unos corazones de oro que son muy típicos. En el museo hay una zona donde explican muy buen todo el proceso de elaboración.

Los trajes de fiesta son los más vistosos y en ellos se emplean muchos detalles y finos materiales. Estos trajes, se utilizan en la grandes fiestas de la Señora de la Agonía que son las principales de la zona y se celebran en agosto.

Por la tarde es un buen momento para subir al Santuario de Santa Luzia, porque es uno de los lugares más emblemáticos de Viana do Castelo. Es visible desde cualquier punto de la ciudad, puesto que el templo está construido a 228 metros de altura, en la cima del monte de Santa Luzia.

Su aspecto exótico se debe a que no es un edificio antiguo, sino que data del siglo XX pero se ha construido con un estilo que intenta recordar a las construcciones del este del mar mediterráneo y se ha llamado
“estilo neobizantino”.

Vale la pena subir al Santuario. Se puede llegar mediante un pequeño funicular que hace el trayecto mas largo de este tipo de Portugal (650 metros de longitud). A los niños les encanta este viaje, sobretodo porque hay un momento en que el tren que sube se cruza con el que baja y parece que ambos van a colisionar.

Desde arriba hay unas vistas panorámicas excelentes ( es una de las mejores del mundo según National Geographic). El día que fuimos nosotros, lamentablemente estaba nublado y no pudimos admirarlo tan espléndidamente como nos habría gustado.

Hay muchas mas cosas interesantes en Viana de Castelo pero, por cuestiones de espacio, hoy no os las puedo describir. Así que, si os parece, tendréis que ir a descubrirlas vosotros mismos. Estoy seguro que esta ciudad con encanto no os defraudará. Nos vemos!

What to see in Viana do Castelo

In the north of Portugal is a city by the sea and at the foot of the Mount of Saint Lucia.

Viana do Castelo deserves to be visited and that we spend on it, at least, one day. I will tell you why.

We had the opportunity to visit it this summer and immediately cultivated, above all, for its charming and small alleys that are located in the historic center of the city.

The central nucleus is very well preserved and we find it around the Republic Square where there is a beautiful fountain that reminds me of the Canaries. In this square is the Town Hall and the wonderful Church of Mercy.

It is worth visiting this church slowly and admire the wonderful tile murals and also, the golden coffered ceilings with carved figures that are a waste of tenderness are very beautiful.

This year, while doing the Camino de Santiago, we had the opportunity to visit the Church of Mercy. It is an essential visit. I will not extend it because a few days ago I described it as it hides a strange curiosity. Here you have the link El misterio del azulejo equivocado

Very close to the Republic Square is the Cathedral of Viana do Castelo which is a fortress church built in the fifteenth century. It is a sturdy-looking building due to its fortress function and has two crenellated towers.

At that time, the churches of the coastal places also served as a place to guard and strengthen themselves against the attack of pirates or other enemies. The same happens, for example, in Porto whose cathedral is also a church-fortress.

The Cathedral was built in the first half of the fifteenth century and became Gothic. It is a temple with the Latin cross plant and is classified as "public interest."

Of the Cathedral, I especially loved the Portico because it is Gothic and because it has been very well preserved. Above it is a magnificent central Rosette that gives light to the interior.

The Portico has the figures of six apostles and an archivolt crowned at its highest point by Christ the King accompanied by angels and musicians who are at his sides.

The apostles represented are: Saint Peter, Saint James, Saint Paul, Saint John, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Stephen. They are recognizable by the objects they carry. In the next article I promise to explain how we can easily recognize each one.

When we entered the interior of the Cathedral, we were struck by its sobriety. This is because he suffered two large fires and is simply restored. The ceilings are decorated with a grayshade in grayscale.

Without a doubt, what caught my attention was a small burial of a local nobleman. The tombstone is arranged next to a small window that illuminates it and gives it a magical appearance. It is dated in the year 1404 and is decorated with astronomical symbols. It is thought that its origin comes from other previous chapels that the knights of marine orders erected. Next to this tombstone there is a medieval baptismal font in which astronomical motifs have been carved into the stone. I liked it very much for its simplicity and rudeness.

After the Cathedral, a good plan is to visit the Costume Museum. Various regional costumes of the area are exposed here. There are some very original and well preserved.

The costumes of important occasions were adorned with watermarks. In Viana do Castelo gold hearts are made that are very typical. In the museum there is an area where they explain the whole elaboration process very well.

The party costumes are the most colorful and they use many details and fine materials. These costumes, are used in the great parties of the Lady of the Agony that are the main ones in the area and are held in August.

In the afternoon it is a good time to climb the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia, because it is one of the most emblematic places of Viana do Castelo. It is visible from anywhere in the city, since the temple is built 228 meters high, on top of the Santa Luzia mountain.

Its exotic appearance is due to the fact that it is not an old building, but dates from the 20th century but has been built with a style that tries to remind the buildings of the eastern Mediterranean Sea and has been called “Neo-Byzantine style."

It is worth going up to the Sanctuary. It can be reached by a small funicular that makes the longest route of this type of Portugal (650 meters in length). Children love this trip, especially since there is a time when the train that goes up intersects with the one that goes down and looks like they are going to collide.

From above there are excellent panoramic views, one of the best in the world according to National Geographic. The day we went unfortunately it was cloudy and we could not admire it as splendidly as we would have liked.

There are many more interesting things in Viana de Castelo but, for reasons of space, today I cannot describe them. So, if you think so, you will have to go discover them. Like me, I'm sure it won't let you down.
