Experimental Designs - I

in #stories7 years ago

Here is something which I printed to test out my 3D-printer capabilities. I found out that this has been circulating online as well, so I cannot well say that it is my own creation due to integrity (I will provide a link to another guy who has created this below).

Fig. 1 - Double-ring

Here's a video of me playing around with the double-ring.

Vid. 1 - Me playing with Double-Ring

The material is ABS, and is printed with a layer height of 0.2mm thickness. It may be possible for me to print it at 0.1mm thickness, but from what I have tried with previous designs, the designs mostly failed, so I will need to play around with the 3D printer more before such a print can occur. It is also printed as an entire part - yes, this is supposed to be an interlocking print. Well, I said supposed, because I was able to push out the inner ring with a bit of force. It may take some design iterations before the inner ring cannot be removed easily.

The print itself is quite smooth, after fiddling with it for a while. It occasionally jams, but that is not a big concern - it will probably be better after sanding the sides. It is quite entertaining as well - you could wear it over your finger and play with it, which is what the designer linked below wanted it to be used for. Of course, it can also be held and played the way I did in the video.
