Beginnings of the Medical School Game

in #health7 years ago (edited)

So my intention since I started Steemit has been to write a medical blog, detailing life at the D.O school I'll be attending in the Bay Area. School starts the beginning of August, and some firsts are beginning to happen, starting with the purchase of my first stethoscope. My girlfriend caught me with a solid snap upon opening up my steth(please excuse the bro-iness).

Expenses at Med School can quickly get out of hand. Without a scholarships, student's rarely make it out with any less than 150K in debt. Those trying to make it out without really crazy debt need to learn how to budget. A number of things, like finding good deals on Ebay or Amazon for used medical equipment, or opting out of the school's expensive health insurance for a less expensive option, or buying the cheaper scrubs, will add up; so students who don't have unlimited funds from Mommy and Daddy need to learn to be shrewd.

The past few weeks have been pretty hectic: working as a medical scribe (taking notes for doctors essentially), selling all of my stuff in my current apartment in SoCal, budgeting for school, buying a new car, getting my federal loans out, getting the immunization forms and requirements filled out, figuring out health insurance, reviewing some initial assignments for med school, and trying to blog on Steemit while of course still maintaining relationships. It's already getting hard to strike a balance and I school doesn't begin for another month.

Any way, it's still a very exciting time and it feels good to get a good deal on a nice stethoscope (this puppy is worth $200 new and I got it for $50). There are many firsts to come, but I've heard the initial wave of joy of receiving your medical equipment, white coat and all that jazz quickly goes away when school starts and the pressure starts to ramp up.

I'm hoping I'll be able to survive without have to be a pure study machine. I think this approach will likely burn me out anyways, so I'm hoping I can learn to manage my time effectively.

For the time being, I'm just making sure I can find the time to relax when the situation calls for it. At least, that's what I did last night, when I went out and got happy and tipsy at the Dodgers, Angels game.

Peace all and have a good Friday,

What field do you hope to practice in? Family? Pediatrics?

My cousin recently graduated with her PhD in the medical field, but she probably didn't have to struggle with finances, since that aunt and uncle pair are quite loaded!

I actually aspire for medical genetics, though it may be a bit of a pipe dream coming from the D.O world

Good luck, and may the study Gods shine upon thee!

Med School. Props, man! Following for your journey :)

Thank you, I appreciate that. I just need to get on the study gods' good graces :)

Medical profession will give you worst startup but believe me, with time you will learn how to enjoy with it .
