A typical place in Provence / Un lugar típico de la Provenza : Les Baux de Provence

Les Baux, located in the Alpilles massif, is today mainly a tourist site before being a place of life. It's one of the most beautiful villages in France and welcome more than one and a half million visitors a year. 22 inhabitants still live in the Les Baux enclosure - the upper part of the village - and 450 inhabitants for the whole commune.

The name of Baux-de-Provence comes from Occitan and Provençal language, it means "in aplomb", "cliff" or "rocky escarpment". Bauxite, aluminum ore, takes its name from this commune where it was exploited for the first time.

Les Baux, situado en el macizo de Alpilles, es hoy sobre todo un sitio turístico antes de ser un lugar de la vida. Es uno de los pueblos más bellos de Francia y da la bienvenida a más de un millón y medio de visitantes al año. 22 habitantes aún viven en el recinto de Les Baux - la parte alta del pueblo - y 450 habitantes para toda la comuna.

El nombre de Les Baux de Provence viene del occitano y provenzal que significa "a plomo", "precipicio" o "escarpe rocoso". Bauxita, mineral de aluminio, toma su nombre de la localidad donde fue explotada por primera vez.

The defensive capacities of Les Baux have always made it an attractive site for human habitat. Traces of habitat were found and dated from 6000 BC.

In the Middle Ages, it became the stronghold of a feudal domain controlling 79 towns and villages in the vicinity. The fortress was built from the eleventh to the thirteenth century on a vast expanse of seven hectares. The princes of Baux controlled Provence for many years and gained a strong reputation. They said that they were descended from the king Magus Balthazar, adding to their coat of arms a silver star with sixteen branches, to recall that which, according to the Gospel, guided the three Magi to Bethlehem.

Las capacidades defensivas de Les Baux han sido siempre un lugar atractivo para la habitación humana. Los rastros de hábitat se han encontrado y fechado en 6000 antes de Cristo.

En la Edad Media, se convirtió en la fortaleza de un dominio feudal que controla 79 ciudades y pueblos de la vecindad. La fortaleza fue construida del siglo XI al XIII en una vasta extensión de siete hectáreas. Los príncipes de Baux controlaron Provence durante muchos años y ganaron una reputación fuerte. Dijeron que eran descendientes del rey Magus Balthazar, añadiendo a su escudo una estrella de plata de dieciséis ramas, para recordar lo que según el Evangelio guió a los tres Magos a Belén.

If you pass in Provence I strongly recommend you to go for a walk in this magnificent small village. On this occasion you will be able to visit the castle as well as careers serving as an exhibition place for artists.
