Strong Earthquake in Osaka

in #steempress6 years ago (edited)

I woke up this morning to my a link sent to my Whatsapp chat group.

There was an Earthquake that struck the Kansai/Osaka area this morning, and it was very serious. It also occurred at the time when the masses were going to work, so many people must have been affected.

Before today I read of reports of quakes in the areas North of Tokyo that happened recently, it's no surprise that Japan has many earthquakes due to geography, but I am still quite taken aback by this sudden news.

I hope that the people in the area are able to receive timely help and that most of the severe shocks have subsided. It was reported that people need to be cautious of dangerous aftershocks, so I also pray that everyone stays safe.

This is quite close to heart because I visit Osaka alot, and I will be going next month as well. Yesterday I had planned to write a post about my upcoming trip and my accommodation issues, but suddenly seeing news of this natural disaster prompted me to write about this instead.

A few years ago I visited the Kobe Earthquake Memorial Museum, and learnt about the history of quakes, and how they have designed new buildings to combat against it. We also tried an Earthquake simulation to feel how strong the shocks and tremors are. Those are all fun and games until reality strikes. I think the residents of the Kansai region are also especially afraid because memories of the major earthquake in 1995 have also resurfaced. Again, I hope that this time round it will be of a lower magnitude and that the aftershocks are not too severe. I saw on Instagram as well that many of my peers have just left Singapore to visit Japan, so I hope they are all safe as well.

To all my friends on Steemit from Japan, and those visiting Japan now, I hope all of you are alright.

It's always been a thought inside my head, but I've always thought of something along these lines:

Japan is such a beautiful country located in an unlucky spot with so many faults, but it is also these faults that give rise to the natural wonders they possess.

Aiaii...my girlfriend from that region also but she is staying with me now in the Netherlands! Hope you guys are doing ok overthere!

ill only be going in July! I hope everyone there is fine!

Hope so too!

I think Japan as a country is very well-prepared for earthquakes. A 6.1 magnitude quake could have done much more damage in any other cities. Nonetheless, my condolences to the casualties and their families.

yea they are definitely prepared, but I think this 'shallow' quake still caught them a little off guard. I am sure that they will bounce back stronger from this!

Hope everyone is safe.

Yes I see you are in Japan now as well, I hope you are alright!!

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

When I was in Tokyo in 2015, we had a 3.1 magnitude earthquake hit while I was in Kamakura. The quake was in Tokyo, so we didn't feel anything. Everyone more or less went on with their day after it was done.

Yea I think that everyone there is prepared for small quakes, i've heard of people who just sleep through the minor but frequent ones. i think that the way the building is constructed, people don't really feel if its minor

You're probably right on that one...

Hoping all are well and my prayers go out to those affected. I live in San Francisco so we get our share of quakes. Fortunately not a bad one recently.

oh my ive actually learnt of a certain San Andreas fault line before, is it anything related to San Franciso?

Yeah we have the famous San Andreas fault but also the Hayward fault and Calaveras fault. Lots of activity here. There is an app you can check to see "if that was an earthquake" for the small ones or "how big was that one" :)

Hope everyone in Osaka is alright, and keep safe all!
