Across the river is a trilogy about the lives of two people whose lives run like the waters of the river, while one flows like a stream, the other is cloudy and inert on the other side. Before reading this second part I invite you to first enjoy the first part.

Trilogy: across the river

Part II

Life can be so raw that all you can wish for is a nightmare from which you can wake up. But clearly I'm hearing the rocks falling from the mountains, interfering with that river that just wants to flow and find its course. Those waves produced with drips are like the intermittent memories of my past and present, which freeze me and remain inert without life. The fish have stopped reproducing in that river which is threatened to ending up simply dry; there are no currents, no riverbed, like a tunnel without an exit where the beginning would be the very end.

After I finished college and got my first job, my life became very routine but I was somehow satisfied with the things I could do and get. I was a very sociable girl, actually I used to make friends easily, I could say that the inherited beauty and humility of my late mother gave me the advantage. A very intelligent and dedicated girl, who could perhaps have the boy of her dreams but who first wanted to go her own way.

My father reminded me every time I visited him that family was important, that I was old enough to meet a man to marry and have heirs, even though I knew deep down that what he wanted was to have grandchildren. Surely at some point in my life I was going to fulfill that dream of his, but I didn't feel ready, the truth is that my head and thoughts were on that attainable goal of being able to have my show in New York fashion week. I had also inherited a taste for clothes from my mother, although she knitted just like my grandmother, I had a taste for something much more innovative, something that fit the present and could evolve with the future. To have my designs dress the most memorable celebrities was a dream I had since I was a little girl when I used to watch my mother knit sweaters, scarves and gloves for the winter season. Something I enjoyed very much, since we would spend the season in the country house my father had built near a crystal-clear river where we would go fishing together, memories of childhood that would last forever in my memory.

We were just my father and me, being that he was a soldier of the cold war who lost all his family; on my mother's side she was an immigrant who arrived with her mother, the rest had died in the fighting, something very sad to remember, so as a child, we were my grandmother who was the first to leave this world, my mother, God rest her soul, who died of leukemia, my father who was still alive today and me, a little girl with many dreams to fulfill.

That happiness at almost getting what I wanted was tarnished for a tragic call. My father, who had been a healthy man all his life, was found in the field with no vital signs. That gray moment of life when you feel loneliness fall from the sky like cold drops that soak up any thought of regret, reminding me that he was all I had left; I could only feel the emptiness of my heart as I said goodbye to him without wanting to; every grain of earth that fell on his grave was incessant blows of pain and tears.

I thought that time would heal that wound, but instead I fell into a depression, I let those dreams go unfulfilled. Savouring what loneliness really was, if before it was only kilometres that separated us, now it is life itself; I could still hear its voice and in the background the river current facing the hard rocks. For all that time I spent that pain on my father's ranch; I wanted in a way to get away from that which was blinding me, a momentary and fictitious happiness. Although I didn't leave my personal blog where I shared my designs, at least twice a week I would walk to the nearby town to sit in front of a computer with a coffee and vent among those biographical writings of my present life. In the evenings I would sit in the rocking chair my father built for me during his lifetime, something I had found in his workshop while he was fixing his things and dusting. The stars witnessed every stitch to the rhythm of the thread of those scarves and sweaters that I made in memory of my mother; all of this was a need to achieve peace, perhaps looking for my life to find a channel like that river.

In time I met a very handsome man from the village who had a lot of property and who knew my father. Through him, I learned much about my father's life that I did not know, or rather, that I missed out on doing other things; they fished together, sowed and got drunk after harvesting and making very good profits. Something that I thanked life for knowing him.

After two years we got married and decided to go to the city again, something that made me want to do what I liked again but in a much more modest way. So I opened a clothing store and a sewing workshop which was filled with loving women, many of them single mothers, something that made me feel that this new path was the right one; I was doing a good cause and at the same time fulfilling my dreams since the clothes I designed were selling fast.

One of those nights while I was preparing dinner for my husband, I feel like the world is spinning so I ran to the bathroom because of the nausea. Once it passed, I sat up in bed to meditate on what was happening, because I had a suspicion that I was pregnant. I told my husband and he was very happy, I wished it was true, and it was. The next day we went to the hospital to take a blood test and I was 3 weeks pregnant. It was a profoundly happy and moving moment as I remembered my father's words when he told me how important family was and how he felt about seeing me married with children.

After a few weeks of sleep, I feel an intense pain in my belly and a viscous liquid soaking my legs. I quickly panicked when I saw that it was blood. We went to the hospital in an emergency while on the way we called my doctor, and when we arrived what I sensed became a dark reality. I had lost my first baby to a miscarriage, but something that marked my life was hearing the doctor say that I could not have any more children. At that moment there was nothing that could comfort me. Eventually I separated from my husband who, like me, was suffering and to whom I could not deny my carelessness as a woman, no longer wanted to be loved; although I felt guilty about everything that was happening, I did not understand the reason why misfortunes were happening to me when my life found peace, as if the force of the waters were repressing itself and ceasing to follow its path.

Ten years have passed, although life is still life and there is time that does not stop for anything. If it hadn't been for those women in the workshop who became good friends, I could have been sure that I would have been immersed in sadness forever. Being single and still wanting to be a mother, I set out to adopt a beautiful girl. The paperwork was a bit difficult since I was single but I made it because of the conviction I had. I gave her all my knowledge so that she could learn to knit as my mother taught me. I had found a new light in my life, I did not feel completely alone, but I knew that something was missing and she would be missing too.

For a mature woman and mother, I was not ashamed to use dating applications, I remember that my classmates in college talked to me about it, but for that time I had no interest at all. I took it for granted that I wouldn't get someone contemporary with me, but to my surprise there were many men my age and more.

When I saw his eyes I felt something that made me shudder, no matter how many miles we were apart, I didn't just want to say hello to him, I was anxious to know about him. I knew that those waters were beginning to come together to take a new path, it was no longer just a matter of crossing the hard rocks and finding the riverbed.
