Percussion instruments are considered the oldest of musical instruments alongside those of wind or harmonics. In the nineteenth century romantic musicians began to use increasingly larger drums, which were used in the early twentieth century, in cakewalk and other American styles precursors of jazz.

With the invention of the bass drum pedal (first of wood, then of steel) in 1910 by Wilhelm F. Ludwig, it was allowed that almost all percussion instruments could be played by a single musician.
