Infructescence: Not fruits at all

in #biology7 years ago

All my life I have been a fan of fruits, it was expected because my mother always had good eating habits and because I lived a small part of my childhood on a farm.

In fact one of my favorite fruits, although they do not grow where I used to live, are pineapples, either natural or in any type of dessert. But a few years ago while reading a botanical book I realized that it could not be one of my "favorite fruits" because technically it is not a fruit, but rather it is an infructescence.

The difference is in the fact that a fruit originates when the ovule of a flower is fertilized, which grows with the seeds inside it, while an infructescence grows when fertilizing a compact inflorescence.

An inflorescence are stems that produce flowers but not leaves, these can vary in number and have different distributions.

Therefore these flowers to be fertilized give rise to small fruits that depending on their distribution can merge giving rise to an infructescence (as in the case of pineapple) or not (such as bunches of grapes).

That's all for today. I hope you liked it. Regards!

Saludos!
