#Animals: Nurse Shark

in #biology6 years ago

Usually when we think of sharks, ferocious specimens such as the white shark or bull come to mind, undoubtedly the best known and popularized in the media. They are undoubtedly great aquatic predators but some of them are not as dangerous to humans as is believed.

A clear example is the nurse shark, whose scientific name is Ginglymostoma cirratum, from the Greek "Ginglymostoma" which means "hinged mouth" and "Cirratum" which in Latin means "that has curled ringlets". It is a widely distributed species, inhabiting mainly tropical and subtropical waters (yes, that includes Venezuela).

The adult specimens can reach a little more than 300 cm. It has a much smaller mouth than the other sharks and a broad head with protuberances in the snout, for this reason it is also known as "cat shark" since they resemble whiskers. It has rounded dorsal and pectoral fins with an elongated caudal fin. Adults have a brown color, while young ones have spots that disappear as they grow.

Taxonomy:

  • Kingdom: Animalia.
  • Phylum: Chordata.
  • Class: Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish).
  • Order: Orectolobiformes (sharks with short snout and small mouth).
  • Family: Ginglymostomatidae.
  • Genus: Ginglymostoma.
  • Species: cirratum.

Being a species that lives on the seabed, it feeds mainly on molluscs and crustaceans, for that reason human beings are out of their menu and even many aquariums allow visitors to touch them, however they can attack if they are bothered .

They are ovoviviparous, reproduce every two years between June and July, the pregnancy lasts 6 months and give birth to 30 young (although some eat between them in the belly ... Perturbing), which measure about 30 cm long.

This was all for today, I hope you liked it. See you in another post. Regards!

  • Reino: Animalia.
  • Phylum: Chordata.
  • Clase: Chondrichthyes (peces cartilaginosos).
  • Orden: Orectolobiformes (tiburones con hocico corto y boca pequeña).
  • Familia: Ginglymostomatidae.
  • Género: Ginglymostoma.
  • Especie: cirratum.

Saludos!
