Meeting Darth Dawkins

in #psychology5 years ago

I guess I'm touching a "touchy subject again" but today, I found out about the existence of a character called Darth Dawkins. If you don't know who that is, good for you. But, it's enough to say he's a very aggressive apologists who loses his cool often, and his religious "conversations" often devolve into insults.

Before I continue, I should say that in a whole, I do find these conversations to be productive. Meaning that I've been challenged intellectually countless times by the people who participate of them. Regardless of where you stand on the matters of faith and religion, there's something to learn from the opposing views and ignoring them is a net negative for our personal growth.

In other words, if we coward away from listening to opposing opinions, then what kind of convictions do we actually hold? Are they that fragile? You get my point. All that said, Darth Dawkins is not the kind of person I find intellectually honest enough to have any sort of debate with, and today I understood why.

Maybe you've heard the term before: Apologetics - reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, typically a theory or religious doctrine. There are some theologists who are masters of their craft, and have truly made my mind work hard in self evaluation. But of course, there's the counter to apologetics, Epistemology. In short the theory of knowledge, especially with regard to its methods, validity, and scope. Epistemology is the investigation of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion.

When these sort of conversations happen, and when intellectual honesty is front and center, these conversations are very powerful in my opinion. But, when it's a measuring of ego sizes, it's absolutely disgusting, vile and completely pointless to participate of them.

You might be asking yourself, why is @meno writing about an unknown character today? Well, because it's the first time I've been doused with the rancid bile and I'm trying to wash it off my brain so my blog must take on the punishment.

I'm glad that's out of the way, time to move on.

@meno, I absolutely agree! I love listening to theological debates.

Are you talking about Richard Dawkins? If so, yea. I know exactly what you mean.

Have you ever heard John Lennox speak? He's an Oxford professor. Old Irish guy. I love listening to him. He has a way of taking really complex things and putting them in plain English.

Oh, I've not heard of him no... but i will look him up right now.

Regarding who I'm talking about, no... it's actually a pseudonym of a Christian Apologist that in my view does Christianity a disservice with his lack of self control.

Regarding Dawkins... he can be a jerk about things too, and he has lost his cool plenty of times. I much prefer listening to Seth Andrews.

Seth Andrews... Not sure I've heard of him. Good trade! Lol.

Yea. Professor Lennox has plenty of good debates and lectures on YouTube. Inspiring Philosophy is good too, even though I don't always agree with the guy. He never fails to give my mind something to chew on.
