Original Painting: Farmhouse on Harvested Wood
Is it possible to do a painting on a piece of wood? There are some who don't think so.
Here is an acrylic painting I did of a client's old farmhouse, which is now gone, painted on wood harvested near the house. This is approximately 18" wide, and I painted everything in sepia tones to match the wood--walnut, if I remember correctly.
She had asked other artists if they would be willing to do something like this, painting on a piece of wood, but they didn't think it was possible.
"Could you do it?" she asked me.
"Definitely," I assured her. It's just a matter of properly priming the wood beforehand.

Here is a detail photo, showing the back side of the house with the old fashioned windmill. You can see the texture of the wood showing through here. I painted the edges of the picture to blend into the woodgrain, and tinted my gesso (primer) to match the color of the wood, so there would be a natural transition.
All in all this was an interesting piece to work on--way different than anything I've done in this past. I thought this was a beautiful way to keep the memories alive!

The pallette you used gives a feeling of watercolor on the wood. It's a great look which would probably not work with actual watercolors since you would need paper to absorb the watercolor. Well done!
Thanks, Otage. I used acrylic with the glazing technique, so it does get thinned out quite a bit. They may explain why it looks like watercolor. Great observation. Upvoted your comment.

beautifully done, great work. I've done a few acrylic paintings on wood (in different forms), do you have concerns of the paint flaking? or did you seal yours?
There shouldn't be any problems with acrylic paint flaking if it's going to be displayed indoors and it's high quality acrylic paint. I use NovaColor paint manufactured and sold out from Culver City, CA. Their paint is as good as Liquitex, Golden, or Windsor & Newton, but at about 1/3 of the price! But yes, I do normally seal my paintings with a clear satin varnish. I didn't do that with this one, because I wanted the wood to look raw and not shiny. I think I just used a flat finish matte medium over the whole painting and then faded it off to the edges. In other words, I didn't apply any paint or medium to the raw wood at all, but just let it look natural.
I'm a Master Finisher of 30 + years , you are doing it fine if you want to do it better for sealing the would . Use Sherwin Williams Water White Conversion Varnish w/ the acid catalyst. This product is made for high end high use furniture and cabinetry . 2 coat's and you can put anything on it and top coat with anything you want . You cannot put it on anything but it's self.
This painting has a very unique ingenuity. I think it's legendary. I've never seen a painting done on stump of wood before.
