AUS beats LUX in first round of Mario Kart World Cup

Did you know that there is a Mario Kart World Cup? Did you know that the fifth MKBoards Mario Kart World Cup is happening as you read this? Well, it is! And it is as awesome as you think!

I finally managed to pick up the Nintendo Switch last week and since then I have been crushing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe like nothing else. Last night as I was searching for the perfect kart combination online, I stumbled across MKBoards.com which then lead me to the Mario Kart World Cup (something I had no idea existed). The best part about all this was that I had timed it perfectly to cheer on the Australian team against Luxembourg in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The Mario Kart World Cup (MKWC) is structured as follows: competitors can race for glory in both Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (MK8DX) on Switch and Mario Kart Wii. A match in the MKWC consists of 12 races in total, each race comprises of 12-players with each nation nominating 6 players to compete. The team with the highest point total after 12 races is declared the winner. This setup is nothing new to anyone who has played Mario Kart. What is noticeably different to your casual Mario Kart experience is the characters and kart combinations in use. Every racer clearly had a preferred setup but there were a lot of heavy Mii characters racing around in the Biddybuggy kart and roller wheels. There is obviously a meta in Mario Kart that I was previously unaware of. If you’re a fan of Baby Mario, I’m sorry but he was nowhere to be seen.

The races were insane to watch. Characters were flying around at high speeds and players were pulling off clutch red shells and ridiculous comebacks. I was lucky enough to witness the Australian player ‘Hayashi’ dominate the match finishing with a perfect run. They were always at the front of the pack leading the charge for Australia, it was very impressive. After doing some research, I found that Hayashi has at some stage held world records for time trials. If you want to learn some lines or techniques for MK8DX I would recommend watching some of his videos.

The entire MKWC is fan hosted by prominent figures in the Mario Kart community. Although the event is not sanctioned or supported by Nintendo, I would love to see them get involved. With Nintendo behind them they would be able to have more advertising and possibly prizes for teams that do well.
