Steemfest Preparation: 10 Helpful Words and Expressions in Dutch
I don't speak Dutch very well, but I on my travels I picked up on some words and expressions.
I find it very useful to learn a little of the local language before I arrive.
Saying Please and Thank you correctly, can go a long way.
Please note that I have learned most of my Dutch from the print on cigarette boxes, from setting my navigation system to Dutch and in bars and pubs.
You can always fill up with english words, most people will understand, especially in Amsterdam.

There should be a prize on finding a single-word translation into English of "swaffelen". Please note that most Dutch people don't swaffel. Anders hebben we straks weer een onuitroeibaar misverstand.

oh, for before eating a meal, it is customary to say 'eets smaakelijk'.
very nice felixxx. really you should have 'hoeveel kost dat' (hoo feel kost dat?) and maybe mention that in amsterdam they say 'goede morgen' as 'hoo-yah mor-khah'. I am gonna be back there soon so maybe i should try my hand at a 'how to be civilised in amsterdam' post...
i'm not that keen on going back to amsterdam but i have many fond memories.
oh yes 'yes, certainly' is 'ja seker' (ya zay-ker) and 'of course' is 'Na-TUR-luk'.
