WSL Announces Pay Equality

Today the WSL announced that all women and men would receive equal prize money for competitions across all elite tour events in 2019 and beyond.

How fantastic is it to see that the surfing world is leading the way in gender equality.

Australian surfer Steph Gilmore said the decision was a vote of confidence for the women's format.

"The prize money is fantastic, but the message means even more," the six-time world champion and world number one said.
"I hope this serves as a model for other sports, global organisations and society as a whole.
"My fellow women athletes and I are honoured by the confidence in us, and inspired to reward this decision with ever higher levels of surfing."

Kelly Slater, all time legend, said the move will set a powerful precedent for other leagues and sports.

"The women on the tour deserve this change," the surfing legend said.
"The female WSL athletes are equally committed to their craft as the male athletes and should be paid the same."

Now it is time for all leagues and sports around the world that have both womens and mens leagues to step up and provide equal prize money. Congratulations to the WSL for their foresight in reaching this milestone and I am looking forward to see womens surfing reach for the stars with this announcement.
