Game Over - Flash Fiction

Rebecca sat in the car. She needed to open the door and leave. Walk-out. Then the relationship would be over. This was her third attempt. She held onto the handle of the door.

"It is a cold world out there Rebecca, we are not young and wanted anymore."

She let go of the handle.

"There are lots of single people our age," she said

"And they are single for a reason," Rick said as he looked her in the eye, "it gets harder and harder to find someone."

Rebecca looked away. She knew what he was doing. The buttons he was pressing.

"Things are not bad with us... you don't to be one of those cougars on the internet, trolling for a date. You don't even know what they are using know a-days."

"I can find out."

"Rebecca you are only going to look desperate... and the clubs... who brought their mother, you know what I'm saying."

Rick laughed at Rebecca. His charm, he thought. She was tired of it. She just had to open the door.

"Look," he said taking her hand, "don't be one of those sad older people who tries to fit in... we work... let's leave it at that. Who needs more?"

She did. She really did. Every day. Every night. The fights. The put downs. His games. There had to better. Had to be. She opened the car door.

"Rebecca, stop playing this game, you know you are not leaving."

She looked at Rick. Her back straight. "You're right, I am done with this game. Play it with someone else."

She took a step out of the car. Rick rolled his eyes and waited for her.
