The story of Joromi retold 3
From the beginning of his life, Joromi was not normal. He was capable of feats of great strength and endurance, even as a child, and could do the work meant for three grown men all by himself. Of course, his father was more than happy to have extra assistance on the farm, although Joromi felt he was more than just the son of a farmer.
His sister, Efun was just as amazing, if not more so. Understanding the nature of things came naturally to her, and she became proficient in using magic. Even as a child, people began consulting her pertaining to mysterious and esoteric matters.
These two children suddenly turned the limelight of the community of Ile-Meta on their parents, who became well-respected. But due to the fact that Joromi and his sister were not considered normal, they had a rather lonely childhood, and were very close.
One day, Joromi came across a group of children mocking his sister, Efun. Rage gripped him, and he sent them all running. One of the children went straight to call his elder brother to deal with Joromi, but to the shock of everyone present, Joromi, who was almost half the size of this elder brother, threw him to the ground without breaking a sweat.
It was here that his prowess for wrestling was discovered. From that moment, anytime a wrestling competition was organized in Ile-Meta, Joromi would participate. And as young as he was, there was nobody that could beat him.
Eventually, he began traveling to other towns and villages, defeating people as he went. His name was now known far and wide. He was always accompanied by his sister, who served to advise him and look out for him. One day, Joromi decided to travel as far as he could in search of the best wrestler to defeat. So he packed enough provisions, and set out with his sister.
After the space of five years, Joromi returned. Ile-Meta had heard news about the man who could never be beaten in wrestling, and they cheered him when he came home. But he was not happy, and soon they found out why. Joromi loved wrestling, but there was now nobody else to wrestle with. He spent most of his time wandering about aimlessly, looking forlorn, when he wasn’t helping his father.
One day, Joromi went into the forest to check his father’s traps, when he heard two strange voices talking, so he hid himself. They were spirits, and they were discussing about a wrestling match, and how it had been so amazing. A plan popped into Joromi’s head.
Disguising his voice, he called aloud from his hiding place that there was someone that could never be beaten in wrestling. At this, the spirits laughed and said it was because he had not wrestled in the Land of Spirits. He replied that the only reason was because this person did not know the way there. So the spirits bade him meet that person and tell him how to get to the Land of Spirits, giving him proper directions.
Joromi was elated. He was going to have the greatest wrestling match of his life!
