The Evil Mother

This story happened in the early 80s as I have heard and I need to share it with the world because of the moral lessons behind the story. Anytime I remember the story, lots of thoughts flood my mind. We live in a wicked world so we should be careful and wise to stay alive.

Eight (8) years after Joe married Ngozi, trouble came into the family. Joe wanted a male child desperately. When his wife put to bed, he rushed to the hospital with a prayer on his mind; ”God, I want a male child, let it be so.” He went to the doctor and pestered the doctor to tell him the gender of his newborn child. His countenance changed when he heard the child’s gender was female. He reluctantly went to the ward to check on his wife.

”I heard you have given birth to another female child. Why can’t you just give me an heir Ngozi?” He asked his wife. His face was as hard as a rock. His wife looked bitterly at him, she was speechless.

For a year after, Ngozi suffered mental and emotional abuse from her husband. He became erratic and cared less about her and their daughters. He rarely stayed home and came back drunk whenever he was home. One evening when he was home, Joe’s family members came around and Ngozi received them with open arms as her in-laws. After they ate, they told her to sit down and the eldest family member spoke - Joe got another woman pregnant and he would bring her home as the second wife after paying her bride price. She hid the sharp pain she felt till they left. When she got to her room, she cried herself to sleep.

Cynthia was brought in as Joe’s second wife. Despite Ngozi’s effort to make peace with her, she was arrogant and never smiled with her. Several quarrels happened and Joe was always on Cynthia’s side which made Ngozi depressed and desperate for a solution. Months after, Cynthia put to bed and it was a boy.

Joe was the happiest man on his son’s naming ceremony. He bought cloth for himself, Cynthia and her family members. He instructed Ngozi and her daughters not to show up. When she stood up against him, she received the hardest slap on her cheeks. She cried throughout the ceremony. Meanwhile, Joe spent money that day, the whole neighborhood ate and drank to the fullest.

Ngozi became more prayerful, she wanted a miracle that will shock everyone around her. One night that Joe had time for her, she took in. Nine months after, she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. Joe was happy for his first wife.

It was another elaborate naming ceremony in Joe’s house to the delight of the neighbors that came around to dine with his family. He named his second son, David. The night of the naming ceremony, Joe went to Ngozi’s room and apologized for his careless and wicked acts. She forgave him.

As David grew, Joe gave him and Ngozi more attention than Tony and Cynthia. This infuriated Cynthia, she complained many times but fell on deaf ears. She instructed Tony not to play with David and her sisters. Despite the boy’s concern, he had to adhere because he knew she was stubborn.

To create harmony in his house, Joe enrolled all his children in the same school. He also instructed Cythia to be in charge of kitchen duties while Ngozi was in charge of house cleaning. This was well received by everyone except Cynthia even though she didn’t show it at the family meeting. David and Tony were the happiest, they were given a room. They jumped around their room and were glad to be roommates.

Tony grew up to greedy and a glutton. His father had warned his mother to caution him before he disgraced the family but Cynthia never did. He was her only child and wouldn’t want problem between them. Months later, Cynthia went to her friend for advice. She felt she was losing her husband to Ngozi. Her friend advised her on what to do.

The next day, she cooked fried rice for the children before they got back from school. When she was through, a customer called her to supply her fabrics so she left home. As soon as the children got home from school, Tony ran to the kitchen and ate his own food. He was still hungry and went to her Mother’s room. He was happy when he saw a plate of food. He started eating.

Cynthia got home and saw the children were at home, she ran to her room and saw her son eating. She screamed and rushed towards him. Joe and Ngozi got back at the same time. The scream alerted everyone and they ran to her room. They met Tony in pain, blood was coming out of his nose and mouth. His mother was wailing and crying.

Well, she confessed the food was poisoned. She got the poison from her friend. She thought if David died, Tony would be the only heir. Everyone was shocked and in tears at the same time.

The evil that men do, live forever with them. After Tony’s burial, Joe chased Cynthia from his house. We later heard she got mad and was taken back to the village.
