Journeys Chapter One p4

in #fiction7 years ago (edited)

After turning his back on the King, Patryg gestured to his six companions, who stepped aside and waited for him to pass them, on the way to the door, then fell in a reverse V formation and matched his steps as they walked out of the Monarch's sight.

As he watched them leave, the Monarch laughed softly in perceived victory. “That's right. Begone you ingrates.”

The court scribe glanced over at the guardsman that was still standing inside the doorway, noting the expression on his face (and by the way agreeing with him,) before turning his attention back to his King. “Your Majesty. I don't know if we've ….. er you've actually won anything.” He cringed back as the King turned and glared at him.

“Shut up, Liam. I got what I wanted.” The King responded as he leaned back in his chair. “When they are gone, I get a free keep and whatever things they leave behind.”

“I wouldn't be so sure about that, my liege,” the guardsman stated. “In over a hundred years, there has never been a single reported incident of theft of any of their relics or treasure.” He paused as the Monarch glared at him. “Rumors speak of a blessing that makes it impossible to steal from them, or even get inside their keep. It is said that only the righteous can enter the keep.”

The Monarch sneered, “We'll find out, won't we?'” He inquired, then answered himself, “Yes, we will find out.”

What have we gotten ourselves into? The old guardsman asked as he watched the Knights walk out.

The six knights walked out of the castle in silence, mounted up and slowly made their way out of the city.
Once outside and into the countryside, four of the soldiers spread out behind their leader, while the fifth moved up beside Patryg and waited quietly.

“Yes, Samael. What is it?” He turned his head to watch his second in command. It weighs heavily on him already. He thought to himself, But it's going to be worse before it gets better.

After a few minutes, Samael mused, “How long do you think it'll be before Kalyb tries to break into the keep?” His hazel eyes were filled with concern.

Patryg looked beyond the head of his horse and arched a brow. “I wouldn't put it past him to try it right after we leave.” His own dark eyes scanned the horizon. “He seems the impatient type.”

“Yes, he does, doesn't he?” Samael shifted slightly, turning to look behind them and nodded as he watched the other four knights as they rode in the same V formation that they'd used walking into the castle. “How long do you think it'll take us to get ready to leave?”

Patryg shrugged. “It doesn't matter. We have one week to get out of the keep, make sure it's secure, and that Kalyb can't get into it. You know what to do.” It wasn't a question, it was a comment, one that didn't need an answer.
