A day out - Kakumäe Peninsula

Many of us have places, that are close to our home, yet we have never managed to visit them. Once actually taken the time to open ones eyes and see the world around you, it can be an experience worth having.

While growing up, i spent many of my summers at the Kakumäe beach, yet i have never managed to visit the tip of the peninsula.

On last Sunday, the weather is calm, yet freezing, very appropriate for early spring. We decide to spend the day outside and drive to the Kakumäe peninsula. The peninsula itself is densely populated, yet the tip is silent, empty and carries remnants of the past.

We leave the car a little further away and head for a walk around the area. The sea wind is absolutely freezing but the early spring nature and sea are a delight to look at.

The small forest ahead doesn't promise mush shelter from the wind, so we tighten our scarfs and forget the cold. After a short while we arrive at a serene lookout point with some kind of art. A closer look reveals that this is actually a bench to enjoy the view and has a name written on it. Initially we think this is the name of the artist, but it turns out, the bench is installed here by the widow of an early-departed and well-known person in Estonia, a telecommunication CEO, for people to take and enjoy the moment.

Lumps of ice in the sea somehow induce a strong wish to jump in and swim between them. While looking beautiful, swimming in winter is not for me. Moving on... :)

We try to walk the narrow path dwindling along the coastline up on the bank, unfortunately, nature has thrown obstacles on our way and we have to resort to exploring the woods as well.

The trip takes a new turn when we spot a tower in the distance. I don't know what is it about the tower, but i have always felt the need to climb them. So this is definite waypoint for our small trip.

Deserted military buildings from old age pop up along the forest path, void of anything and with collapsed roofs.

On the other side of the tip of the peninsula, we find more bunkers from the old era. I've heard about these bunkers and they should be halfway under water most of the time, luckily due to the cold weather, the water in them has frozen, making a slippery ice floor and allowing us to peek inside.

The first one seems to head on too deep and without proper lighting we decide not to take this one. The ice floor feels a little flimsy in there. The second shelter however looks better in terms of the floor. I test it with a brick, the brick bounces off the floor like it was rubber and flies away to north with the returning birds.

What's amazing, is how time and moisture have managed to chew through solid metal beams, leaving nothing but a corroded swiss metal cheese with a smell of tetanus.

The tower is close now. Following what seems to be a dried up riverbed we make our way to the base of the tower.

Judging by the footprints, people come here often. We have managed to circle the tip of the peninsula and almost rounded back to our car. Unfurtunately, the door to the inside of the tower, that most probably has a ladder that enables you to go to the top, is welded shut. Bah!

We end our trip, when we find the proof of the existence of yeti. This pile covers a solid half a meter each way. On a closer look though, it is revealed that someone has just poured potatoes for the wild animals lurking in the area.

Hahah, I thought that was a pile of deer poop! :D

The part where you said the lumps of ice made you feel like jumping in and swimming inbetween them made me think how refreshing yet freezing cold that would be. Next thing I was thinking of bubbly beverage glasses with ice cubes in them during a hot summer day, mmm... Yum!

It also reminded me of a specific car I've seen near the US Embassy when going to the Children's Hospital (regular check-ups) with my little one. I don't remember what car it was other than that it was a nice metallic shiny blue and you could clearly see water drops all over it when it had rained beforehand. Again, giving you the refreshing feel a cool beverage mid-summer would give.

You mean something like this? I understand how one could make that connection, but i remember that moment to be so freakin' cold, that i could barely hold my phone for taking the photo :)

Okay, now THAT'S a lot of ice, haha :D
I meant like a couple of cubes not a whole iceberg!

Did y'all grab some hot cocoa or tea after the trip?

Just some good food and a shot of vodka will do the trick usually :)

Considering the heat we're currently having here, I'd have no problem to take a bath inside that icy water too =D

You would regret that decision in 0.5 seconds :)

I went to the beach in Portugal and that was cold as hell already =P I'd probably regret the decision the second my little toe touches the water =D

Ohh I have also visited Kakumäe Peninsula, and I think this place is beautiful and some kinda of scary :D

seal torni all suht chill spot kus peale teha.
