The Magic Of Literature ; Day 245 - 365 Days of Writing : Challenge
Sometimes, the thought of escaping the realities of life seems appealing. Some escape through alcohol, partying, sex and other drugs. There is one solution I have found, that works like magic. What is my solution, Reading.
Reading exposes us to new worlds, new places, new cultures and new experiences. You can lose yourself in the world of books and words. You can forget the world and it's problems when you immense yourself in the world that books can create.

For instance, a reader in Ghana can live the life of a poor orphaned boy being mistreated all through his life. This can be done by grabbing Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and follow Oliver on a journey of pain, lessons and a little humor.
The knowledge gained about other cultures is outstanding. Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart taught me a lot about Africa's reaction to colonization and Christianity. may not have been born that time, but I know how it was received and I have Chinua Achebe to thank for that.
Reading even gives you hope and a belief in a Supernatural Being or Deity. Whether it is a belief in God Almighty or smaller gods, you know there is something. Read Ola Rotini's The Gods Are Not To Blame and then, you will understand me.
Well, when next you think alcohol or sex will help relieve stress or make you feel better, why don't you grab a book, a hot Ghanaian chocolate drink and curl up in your favorite chair. As you immense yourself in books, you will see what I mean when I say literature is magic.
