Let's stay glued to our seat and see what will happen next in the second chapter.

CHAPTER TWO
Down to the narrow path to the well, the girls came across an old woman
who they believed, could give them more information about their friend's
departure.

"Good morning, Nana Ama," said the girls.
"Good morning, my granddaughters. How are you?"

" We are fine," replied the girls, "and you?" "I'm also fine," said the old
woman. "Please, Nana, where have they taken our friend, Maame Yaa to?"
Aggie asked.

"Oh, so you girls don't know?" asked the old woman. "Maame Yaa was
given out like a fowl to the so-called rich woman from Akosombo, Auntie
Adoma.

" I heard that the old woman had no child of her own but she multreats
children who stay with her..."

The girls became very sad, but it was getting late so they told the old
woman they would see her later.

After that, they went to the old woman's house to continue their
inquiry about Maame Yaa.

"My granddaughters," the old woman began, "I can see you are very
worried about your friend."

" Indeed we are, Nana," the girls said in unison. "Well," replied the old
woman, "as you can see, you can't help her now. But if i get any news about
your friend or how you can help her in any way, I'll let you know."

The girls thanked the old woman and left. Before long, news of Maame
Yaa started coming from Akosombo. Auntie Adoma, they learned, had
indeed started maltreating Maame Yaa.

The girls learned that each morning, Yaa woke up very early, swept the
big compound of the rich woman's house, washed the dirty clothes,
washed herself and prepared the woman's breakfast. She then went to the
market to sell the woman's wares. She came home around two in the
afternoon before she ate her first meal for the day.

The girls learned the house chores of Auntie Adoma were too much for
Yaa. Someone said she saw Yaa one day sleeping behind her wares at the
central market at Akosombo.

" Poor little girl. Guess how tired she must have been," said the old
woman who told the girls the story of Yaa's plight.

"My only worry is that, if she is not given proper care, she might fall into
the company of bad friends and become a bad girl herself," bemoaned
the old woman.

"Maame Yaa to become a bad girl?" asked her friends. "God forbid!"

" God truly forbid, my granddaughters," replied the old woman. "But don't
forget that things of that nature do happen, you know," started the old
woman in soft worried tones.

"I'm old, and l've seen a lot in life. There was once a girl at this village.
She was very good when she lived here with her parents. Unfortunately,
when her parents sent her to the city, the person she was to stay with did
not take good care of her as promised. The poor girl was forced to run
away from home, and she fell into bad company as a result."

"Oh, how unfortunate!" Lucy said. "It was indeed very bad. The girl fell
into a bad company of thieves. They went to steel one day, and she was
caught and beaten to death," the old woman concluded.

The girls were very sad when they heard this storey. Was a similar fate
going to befall their beloved Yaa? They could find no answer. Their only
prayer was that nothing of the sort should happen to her.

To be continued another time...
