A total of fifty thousand Spanish volunteers formed the 250th Infantry Division, better known as the Blue Division. This unit was created in the middle of the year 1941 to support the European armed forces, led by Germany, in their fight against the Soviet Union during the Second World War.

Between the years 1941 and 1943, the Blue Division participated in several battles near Leningrad, the most important being the one that took place in Krasny Bor on February 10, 1943, where some 5,900 Spanish soldiers, scarcely equipped with light weapons, clashed 44,000 Soviet soldiers who had numerous pieces of artillery and 100 tanks of war. In the combat, 3,127 Spanish volunteers were killed, 1,035 were wounded and another 300 men were captured. In the Red Army 9,500 combatants died and an estimated 2,500 were injured.
