US Capital Markets Review 4/20/18

in #stocks6 years ago

The US capital markets had a good week, building on momentum from the previous week. The S&P 500 was up 0.52% for the week, putting the broad index right at flat for the year. Domestic stocks performed better than international stocks, broadly speaking, but trailed emerging markets by more than double with the Russell Global index posting a gain of 1.3%.

Oil had a very strong start to the week, but scaled back toward the end of the week, but still posted a respectable gain of 1.2% for the week. President Trump's remarks about OPEC inflating oil prices put a tampdown on the weekly gain. Gold was down for the week (0.75%) and closed the week at $1,336 on ounce, while the VIX index was down 3.0% for the week.

In economic news, the unemployment rate remains at historic lows of 4.1% and the US initial jobless claims were strong again, with a low number of 232k. Consumer confidence dropped slightly, as did the consumer price index.

Political news seemed to have less of an effect this week compared to the last two months. Positive developments on potential talks with North Korea did come out this week. Former FBI Director James Comey's memos and personal notes were leaked this week and Michael Cohen, the President's personal attorney, is facing a number of legal and regulatory issues, but neither seemed to be affecting markets in a significant way.

Overall, the US capital markets remain strong and I continue to be fully invested.

Good luck,
Brian

Hello my friend @brian.rrr. Excellent Review of US capital markets This week, as always you scrub every important detail of everything that happened in the week. Like last week, this week was good and that makes me happy, as I told you last week, telling you that this week was going to be just as good, because it seems that I'm not wrong and if it was that way. In economic matters things matured well, and the political matter because the president trump has yet to make good decisions for the country and worry a little more for its inhabitants, but he believed that there was good news this week. I am glad that the unemployment rate remains at historical lows of 4.1%, because that means that there are not many unemployed people and the matoria is working hard, to bring food to their home and pay all their receipts from their homes , that's good, since unemployment is bad. Thanks for the review this week my friend, as every week your publication is informative, educational and very important. Happy weekend.
