US Capital Markets Review 11/9/18
This week was a small rebound week as the major indicies advanced. The Dow Jones Industrial Average led the way with a weekly gain of +2.8%, followed by the S&P 500 at +2.1%. Large cap stocks outperformed small cap stocks, and value stocks did better than growth stocks for the week.
In terms of sector performance, health care and real estate did well with weekly gains of +4.0% and +3.7%, respectively. Communication services lagged at -0.2% for the week. Gold was down -1.9% for the week, closing at $1,210 per ounce. Silver was down -1.3% for the week, closing at $14.13 per ounce. Oil fell hard, posting a weekly loss of -5.2%, and closing at $59.84 per barrel (West Texas Intermediate).
In economic and political news, the Fed kept rates unchanged, but signed a further expected rate hike in December. The US mid-term elections took place this week, which resulted in Republicans losing majority control of the House of Representatives. This is expected to put even more gridlock in the political process, but markets reacted positively to a balance of power in Washington.
Cryptocurrencies were mixed for the week. Bitcoin popped a bit, but came back down and ultimately settled near breakeven, currently at $6,375 (from 6340). Steem retreated despite the increased awareness due to SteemFest and posted a weekly loss of -5.1%, currently at $0.75 (from .79). EOS was up +1.9% this week, and is currently at $5.40.
Overall, the US markets and economy remain healthy, though valuations are high.
