Stockholm - Djurgården

in #stockholm6 years ago (edited)

Djurgården (Swedish wikipedia) is an island. It was a peninsula from around 1750 until 1834, as Djurgårdsbrunnskanalen was reestablished (kanaler.arnholm.nu, Swedish wikipedia). The name comes from a zoogarden with different kind of deer, established in 1579. Today Djurgården is a popular place for tourists and locals due to the various museums, the "Gröna Lund" Tivoli and lots of parkland.

(note: I've chosen to point all my Wikipedia-links today to the Swedish Wikipedia - but all of the articles exists also in English Wikipedia, it should be easy to navigate there or to another language).

Here is a photo from the distance, with Skeppsholmen to the right.

A bit closer now, here we can see Junibacken in the front, the Vasa Museum to the right and the Nordic Museum behind.

For anyone having small children and having some experience with some of the stories from Astrid Lindgren (in particular Pippi Longstockings) or other Swedish children authors, I would strongly recommend a visit to Junibacken - it's fantastic!

Today we can laugh about the Vasa ship and the stupidity of the King and the designer of the boat. It was a very expensive and large warship built in 1628, with lots of cannons and decoration - but it was very unstable, fully loaded with cannons it had the center of gravity high above the waterline. With sailboats it's quite essential to have the center of gravity under the waterline, at all times - so on it's maiden trip it capsized as soon as the wind picked up. It's now exhibited in the museum.

There are also some other ships on display outside the museum, in particular we can see the lightship Finngrundet here.

I still haven't been to the Gröna Lund tivoli, but it looks like a fun place.

Were you visiting Stockholm lately? It would have been nice for a bit of sun to show up there :) Scandinavia with more sun would be a heaven on earth.

We had quite a lot of sun in Scandinavia this summer, generally spoken. Too much, many will say, including most farmers :-)

I was in Stockholm Friday and Saturday morning due to a company seminar. We were initially planning to go to Stockholm this summer vacation, but due to the problems with the anchoring gear, we opted for the Netherlands instead. While there are many nice anchorages in the Netherlands too, I believe we'd want to anchor up almost every single night on the way from Copenhagen to Stockholm.

I love the pink in those clouds..

Wao wonderful photography.Blue water looks so beautiful.Wonderful and big ships in the water.Blue water attracts the peoples.Very big towers. All childrens having a great fun. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for showing us around :)
