Balboa Park San Diego

Balboa Park in San Diego

Balboa Park is one of my very favorite places in town. The land was gifted a long time ago to the city with the condition that it has to be available to the public forever. No selling to the highest bidder!

Most people equate Balboa Park with the part where all the museums, fountains and cafes are. The style of the buildings is kind of Sapnish style and was chosen for a world fair that came to San Diego in 1935, I believe.

We are lucky that the city council at various times decided to keep the building up and they are now housing many Museums. On Tuesdays, some are always open to the public free of charge.

When my kids were little, the first Tuesday of the month used to be free day. All the Museums were open. We came every month and it was a huge part of our homeschooling experience.

This picture was taken on earth day a year ago and we are looking west toward the clock tower of the Museum of Man. Every weekend, it is busy like you see in this picture - there are no vendors on normal days. But plenty of artist, street performers, tarot readers, and people sharing their believes.

If you ever come to San Diego, make sure to visit Balboa Park.

It's open to the public? That's amazing... I love museums too and this would be something I would be all into.. Too bad it's so far away!

So cool that you used to fo to museums with your kids! :D that's how you raise a curious child :3
If I ever go to San Diego I'll make sure to go to Balboa Park as well.

thank you. Yes. please do. And if you come, let me know so we can organize a Steemit meetup!!

Hey, @mariannewest.

We've been to San Diego twice. We went to the San Diego Zoo both times, and somehow missed Balboa Park. At least the second time. The first time was long enough ago I don't remember it nearly as much.

At any rate, I'd love to go back to San Diego and do more looking around.

The last time we were there we ended up at the Hard Rock Hotel. We were going to stay at a cheaper hotel (Best Western), but there WiFi wasn't working and we somehow found out about a room special Hard Rock was having, so we checked out that same day. I needed access to the Internet because I needed to work while we were down there, or we probably would have stayed at the other hotel.

I think we had the Southern California Pass, which at the time included two things in San Diego (zoo, safari, Legoland and/or Seaworld), and we ended up at the zoo and at SeaWorld. We also went to Disneyland/California Adventure that trip, as well as Universal Studios. Can't remember now if that was a part of it or not.

It was a great trip, though. Really should try to go back down to San Diego one of these days when we're down visiting my wife's family.

For sure!! And the good news is that you were in Balboa Park. The Zoo is part of it too :)

the Hard Rock Hotel sounds like fun!

I saw that Balboa Park was right there when I looked on the map, I just don't remember it, I guess. Or it could be we were wandering thought it when I thought we were in the zoo, which would account for why we didn't see as many animals for a good stretch of ground. :) Just kidding. It was more likely the heat of the day.

The Hard Rock Hotel was fun, but it's not really a family place, I don't think. And while the rooms were discounted, the meals in the restaurants downstairs were definitely not discounted. :)

I'd recommend it, though. Very fancy, cool decor in the rooms and in the hallways that you won't find anywhere else, and since it was fairly new, everything was just, well... new.

I don't really remember what the service was like, which probably means I was treated okay, but no one really went out of their way. That I would remember. :)

Looks like a great place, what all was in the Museum of Man?

They have different exhibits at different times. Always kind of the history of man in one part. Right now, they are having the history of beer and pretty soon, there will be a haunted house - which I am not going to because I scare easy. 😳 😱

History of beer? Lol! Bet @buzzbeergeek would like that one!

I bet he would! And San Diego is full of Microbreweries. I bet he would like that too. And my son is director of brewing operations at a pretty big one and can show him around. 😄
All of that and I don't drink 🤪

Love Balboa Park. At nite it becomes a gentle romantic place. The plays at The Old Globe Theater are world class. I went to a German Film Festival with my wife a few years ago at one of the art buildings there. Umm, we watched the art film, everyone sat there somewhat confused (as people are after art films) when they guys running the projector came out and told us that they had played the reels of film in the wrong order. The thing is, no one could tell - or even suggest how they should go. Well, I thought it was very funny.
Anyway, I love Balboa Park and the Zoo is right next to it.

hahaha - that must have been funny!!! I think I need to go with my husband to Balboa Park soon. Maybe in December?

Looks like a pretty nice tower, sounds like a great place to visit with all the museums. I think as a kid we went to the San Diego Zoo once, but that was like in ancient times, so I can not remember for sure. But as a kid we visited a lot of zoo's.

Thanks for sharing this fantastic destination. I have many great memories of visiting Balboa Park, and your post has me craving a return!
