Nelson Mandela needs to introductions, his name and legacy transcends his life. He is a renowned personality revered by many and loved by all.

For the purpose of any one new to Nelson Mandela's personality, he was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtata , then part of South Africa's Cape Province. He was given the name Rolihlahla, but was later known by the name Madiba among his clans men.

Mandela was one of the first people among his family members to be to school so he had this to say
"No one in my family had ever attended school. On the first day of school my teacher, Miss Mdingane, gave each of us an English name. This was the custom among Africans in those days and was undoubtedly due to the British bias of our education. That day, Miss Mdingane told me that my new name was Nelson. Why this particular name I have no idea."

He spent 27 years in prison because of his vocal, radical and controversial nature against the ruling government. He was released in 1990 by President F. W de Klerk.

He later succeeded Oliver Thambo as president of South Africa where he ruled from 10 May 1994 to 16 June 1999.

He is largely remembered for his anti-apathied movement and courage to speak against evil.
Nelson Mandela died on 5 December 2013.

In November 2002, the United Nations officially declared the
Nelson Mandela International Day and the first Nelson Mandela International Day was celebrated on July 18 of 2010. The day was created to honors the contribution of the former South African President to the culture of peace and freedom . The General Assembly recognizes the values of Nelson Mandela and his dedication to the service of humanity in the field of conflict resolution, the protection of human rights, gender equality, rights of children, race relations and much more.
