THE MIRACLE OF THE FOOTPRINTS OF THE VIRGIN MARY @mariaentela

I was in a total awe, when I visited the Monastery of Proussos a few months ago. Walking through the path that leads to the Proussos Monastery in Karpenisi, someone can witness the miracle called the "The footprints of the Virgin Mary". It is a strange phenomenon which no one has managed to explain till today. I would like to tell you in brief the story of this miracle, as it was told to us by the monks, who live in the monastery and have dedicated their lives to the Virgin Mary.

The monk told us that in 829 AD when the Imperial of Byzantine Theophilos gave the orders to burn out all the Orthodox icons, a young boy of a wealthy family, wanting to save the icon of the Virgin Mary, brought it to Greece by himself. Suddenly, one night when he fell asleep the icon mysteriously disappeared from the sight. The boy kept searching for the icon anywhere for many years and finally found it at a very hidden place, in the mountains of Karpenisi.

He brought it back with him but the next few days the icon disappeared again. He got very sad and disappointed because he thought the locals had stolen the icon from him. He was accusing them and strictly demanding from them to return what they had stolen to him. Even though he soon would regret to have accusing the locals for the crime of stealing the icon because the Virgin Mary herself came to his sleep as a vision and guided him to where her icon was.

Moreover she told him that she herself has chosen that place to be 'her home'. After that the boy went to that place and found the icon there in a cave. From that day on he decided to build 'The home of the Virgin Mary' there as she has guided him in his sleep. That place is where the Monastery lies today and was named after the "Lady of Proussos.

They claim that the traces that the traces that Virgin Mary left behind while getting away from the boy, were printed in a rock formed with more than seven shapes of different colors. Those were called the Virgin Mary's footprints.
