37-year old Swiss tennis legend, Roger Federer just hours ago, added another title to his already bulging and bloated trophy cabinet, with the Hopman Cup of 2019. By winning the title this year and just hours ago, the Switzerland tennis icon and his team-mate Belinda Bencic have now won the event for the second time in a row.

As for Roger Federer, the win is the third time his is claiming the trophy; having initially won it with Martina Hingis backing 2001.
In the 2018 edition, Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic had faced Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev in the final of the tournament. The Swiss pair won that very fixture, and dethroned France who were the defending champions at the 2018 tournament, but failed to compete in the event.
Fast-forward a year later, in the 2019 edition, the Swiss pair of Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic once again, played against Germany’s pair of Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev.

And like was a repeat of the previous year, the Swiss pair triumphed over the German’s for a back-to-back victory. In this year’s event, Roger Federer triumphed over Alexander Zverev 6 – 4, 6 – 2 to earn Switzerland a 1 – 0 lead.
When it came to the ladies, Angelique Kerber, the current Wimbledon champion triumphed over Belinda Bencic to level the tie for 1 – 1 between Switzerland and Germany. However, Roger Federer and Switzerland had a different say when it came to the mixed doubles event. Switzerland overcame Germany via a narrow 4 – 0 1 – 4 4 – 3 (5 – 4) victory.

By winning the 2019 event, Switzerland was winning the Hopman Cup for the fourth time, while the legendary Roger Federer was winning it for the 3rd time.
The 2019 edition of the mixed doubles saw an adoption of the fast 4 rule, which was introduced in the 2017 edition; and meant that the first team to reach four points wins. However, as per the fast 4 rule, a tie break will be observed if both teams are tied at 3 – 3.
Winning the event this weekend, Roger Federer thus becomes the first tennis player to win the Hopman Cup on three occasions. Federer has appeared to be reaching the end of his glorious career for a few year. But every time that we think he is going to hang it up, he wins another event. Is Roger Federer the best tennis player of all time? Let's see what 2019 has in store for the legend...
