Long Beach Island, NJ which is locally known as LBI or referred to as the Island is a barrier island along the Atlantic coast of Ocean County in New Jersey USA. The primary industries include tourism, fishing, and real estate. Access to the island is by a double lane causeway and there is a water taxi from the mainland at the Tuckerton Seaport.
Year-round there are about 20,000 people that live on the island which balloons to around 100,000 as the tourist arrive during the summer months. There are six separate municipalities of close knit neighborhoods which are largely affluent and are filled with vacation homes of the wealthy that live elsewhere mainly New Jersey, Pennsylvania , Connecticut and New York.
The island has been settled since 1690 and at first it was primarily a place for hunters.
There were the shark attacks of 1916 which included the death in Beach Haven of University of Pennsylvania student, Charles Vansant, which helped inspire the book, Jaws.
The island has experienced several storms over the years one which split the island in half at Harvey Cedars, the island's most narrow point. However, the most notable of the storms was the Ash Wednesday storm of 1962 which split the island into several pieces and nearly completely destroyed it and caused the USS Monssen to come ashore in Beach Haven Inlet.
LBI is such a wonderful place to come for a true island experience in the summer.
Since the 911 disaster many have come from NYC spending longer periods of time and some have even set in motion buying the summer house that will become the main residence in the coming years.
