Getting the Right Bums on the Right Seats

So often the key levers for growth lie in the people that surround us - our team.

These might be partners, employees, advisors, coaches, friends or family.

In a business context, it is important not only to find the right people but also to put them in the right role - getting the right bums on the right seats on the proverbial bus to drive the business forward.

Finding the right people can be hard. But it is a key role of an entrepreneur and business owner. Effectively, being a "talent spotter". Bringing people on board and enthusing them with the ethos and vision of the company.

Many businesses struggle along with minimal, if any, employees. Bumbling around trying to fill every role. I like to think of the Dean Jackson quote: "think who, not how?". I always revisit this quote with clients. Don't try to learn "how" to do Facebook marketing, think "who" can do Facebook marketing for my business.

Hire the experts in every field. Develop a team of 'A' players.

Look at the likes of Richard Branson and other successful entrepreneurs. They repeatedly attribute their success to their team. They surround themselves with great people. People who click with the vision of the company and founder and want to contribute to the success of the organisation.

So invest in your team. Build out your organisation-chart early doors (and make sure you're not in all of the boxes!). Find the right people and match their inherent talents to the roles in your business. Don't be afraid to move people around if you mutually agree that there might be a better role for them elsewhere in the business. And be quick to eject the bad apples.

I've yet to find a super-successful solo-entrepreneur (in the truest sense). Don't bother trying to be one of them.

Hi Steve. I have always had the thought process to surround yourself with better people than your self offering different skills. Normally that is the recipe for success.
