My Favourite UK Holiday
It's not Just the Time for Giving!
One of my favourite UK public holidays is Christmas time, and specifically Christmas day. And no! It is not about the fact of giving and receiving presents, I find that modern day Christmas time is far too focused on the commercial side, and having worked in the retail management industry for just over a decade, where the 'Christmas Sales' start three months in advance and then in the latter days working with clients on their festive promotions, the concept of the giving and receiving of gifts do nothing for me.
In fact the reason I like Christmas Day, is that I have a routine, sort of a tradition if you like. Yes, we all sit down and open presents in the morning, but what I really like is that it is my day to cook! (Although that is pretty much every day now.), however it is the preparation of the Christmas dinner that floats my boat, firstly in the morning, I begin with a full English breakfast, this includes everything from bacon, sausages, egg, black pudding, hash browns, beans and mushrooms all accompanied with rounds of buttered toast. After a quick clean up it is then to prepare the all important Christmas dinner, having already done the turkey the night before and on a slow cook, I then prepare all the vegetables, with the all time classic brussel sprouts, once the potatoes are par-boiled, some of these are destined for the oven and coated in goose fat to make roast potatoes. The table is also specially set out, with a Christmas tablecloth, festive crackers, red napkins and a centrepiece of holly and a festive candle.
It really is a time that is all about family, where we can sit down and enjoy a veritable feast, with no phones switched on or interference from any other digital devices, and that includes no TV. Once done, it's on with the washing up, sit down and switch the TV on and watch the queens speech followed by the Christmas Day movie.
That's what makes Christmas Day my favourite UK public Holiday!
