Treasure Hunt 尋寶 “A City a story” photo contest #52 Topic (STORE 雜貨店)

Apliu Street, a great place for treasure hunts, satisfy men's shopping desires. It is famous for selling cheap electronic products. There are many small grocery stores, which are a famous street in Hong Kong.

Apliu Street, also known as Electric Street, is located in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon, Hong Kong. As early as the 19th century, there was no such street. Apliu Street was just a sea. The coastal area was farmland and fish ponds. The Hong Kong Government reclamation the land in order to increase the land. A lot of duck farming has been developed. Later, the Sham Shui Po District was included as an urban development zone. Many new roads need to be built, so this street was born. Apliu Street was named after many duck farms.

After 1930, Hong Kong's economy just started and the people's lives were not good. Therefore, many people would take out the old items in their homes and sell them to earn living expenses. Apliu Street began to sell second-hand goods at that time. In the 1970s, Apliu Street became a distribution center for electronic components and began selling audio equipment, hardware and electronics. In the 1980s, some electronics owners got rich, their business entered the Pearl River Delta in China, and the telecom industry in Hong Kong took off quickly, establishing billions of electronic enterprise groups market. With the economic take-off, audio has become a high-end product for men. At that time, as long as you talked about audio, you must mention "Ap."

The biggest feature of Apliu Street is these booths. In the early days, only booths and trolleys were placed in the center of the road. I have also operated these booths before. A booth is set up every day and the trolley will be pushed back to warehouses in the building at night.

In 2011, a fire broke out in Garden Street, Mong Kok. The government transformed all the stalls into small iron stores and divided them into more than 200 small iron stores.

All stores are only 120 cm x 90 cm. They are very small. Because the store is small, they can only sell small items. Now they sell special products such as some novel digital products, rechargeable flashlights, electronic parts and accessories, cameras equipment, cell phones, wire and battery cables, transformers, LED lighting, electric drills, used appliances, game consoles, vinyl records, travel phone cards, mini-controlled car planes, even some antique groceries, watches, old coins, old records and old magazines…

I am also a frequent visitor here, because the products here are popular, I often bought audio speakers in the 80s, walkman, CD player, MP3 player, and now I often buy some mobile phones and camera supplies, because there are a lot of special ones here, grey market mobile phones are rarely found outside. Many foreign tourists like to buy some camera equipment, mobile phone wiring, etc. because they are all $20 to $40 HKD, very cheap.

You will see some old people on the side street, they bring the old items to the ground and sell them. They are like the foreign garages sell, the items they find at home or in the garbage, so maybe you can find some antique treasures here.
