Authorities Extorts 500,000 Kyats by Preying on Rohingya

Maungdaw: Burmese authorities, with the help of four informants, extorted a huge sum of money from an innocent Rohingya in a village of Maungdaw township, explains a villager from the area.

A Rohingya named Moulvi (religious teacher) Rahmat Mullah hailing from Mangala (They Ra Oo) village of Maungdaw Township was accused falsely by the Burmese authorities and extorted 500,000 Kyats.

According to locals, authorities managed to extort such a huge amount with the help of four informants, who are actively collaborating with Burmese authorities in the area.

“They (authorities) always come and accuse any Rohingya,” explains a Rohingya youth from the same village.

He further added that usually youths and educated Rohingya are made a prey of money extortion or arbitrary arrests for forcing them to leave the country like other thousands.

The upcoming 25th August will mark a year end of the pre-planned attack on Rohingya in 2017, which have forced out more than 800,000 Rohingya to makeshift camps of Bangladesh.

Situation are deteriorating day by day for the remaining Rohingya, and hardly a few Rohingya remains in their own land.
