Steem Basic Income Giveaway (Assumed Knowledge)

All of us are experts in something, it could be esoteric (some obscure science field or sociological knowledge), artistic (painters and musicians), practical (gardening and cooking) or plain weird (being able to recite pi to a million digits). If we think about this, this should be obvious, as we all devote our time and energy towards our specific interests via work or play or study.

As we have completely different life experiences and learning, it is too easy to forget that what we know, not everyone else might know! Things that are stupidly obvious to us, are completely opaque to others. And this is a good thing, as long as we are tolerant of the difference and use it as a chance to learn or teach, rather than as a way of highlighting a potential superiority or difference.

So for this week's SBI giveaway, I am asking about what is that you know that you mistakenly think everyone knows... and what is it that you think everyone else knows, but you seem to be the only person that can't grasp the concept! They can be either serious or trivial or funny... anything that comes to mind!

My assumed knowledge

Pexels

Weirdly enough although I'm a musician, I don't assume too much of other people in this area. However, I had studied also Theoretical Physics (with a good dose of Mathematics), and here it is that I keep tripping myself up. I always seem to assume that people understand or know more about Physics and Mathematics in general. For instance, I always think that people understand basic Mechanics (Forces/Energy), basic differentiation and integration (the basis of Calculus), in addition to be at least familiar with the basic concepts of Quantum Mechanics and Relativity. I don't expect them to understand the mathematics of the Physics topics, but I always think that the predictions and basic concepts are more widely known than they apparently appear to be...

For the the thing that I just can't get my head (and hands around) that I think everyone else on Earth has figured out, is the folding of women's clothes. Men's clothes are easy, flat and simply shaped everywhere. Women's clothes just don't fold flat or easily... and yet everyone else seems to manage and not make a weird shaped pile of the laundry! What is the secret? What am I missing?

Rules

  1. Upvote if you want, it increases the payout and then I can hopefully sponsor more people.
  2. Resteem is NOT neccessary, but the more people see this, the more the people will be likely to be sponsored.
  3. In the comments, tell me what is that you know that you thought everyone knew! And what is it that everyone seems to know that you just can't do or wrap your head around?
  4. I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
  5. I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a beginning author, Steemit can be a daunting place. It feels like you are posting into an abyss with no ability to grow. Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but cumulative over time support to your account.

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people).

Last week's winners

Last week paid out 1.182 SBD and 0.736 STEEM, so I will make it 3 shares.

Congratulations to:

Thanks for having the contest @bengy! I'm a big fan of Steem Basic Income.

Things I don't seem able to get, yet everyone else does? Simple mechanics and assembly of stuff. The entire world seems able to remove something from a "some assembly required" box and figure it out in minutes with just casual (or no) reference to the instructions. For me? I have to read everything six times, lay everything out in order... and no matter how many times I've put together IKEA furniture, it STILL is a major ordeal every time!

Now here's the contradiction: I seem able to "problem solve" far better than most. I see a bunch of variables and inputs and I can intuit the correct outcome in seconds. People ask "How do you DO That???" and I am baffled because it feels like common sense. Evidently... it's not.

Ha ha, it all seems to stemfrom being a cat. Assembly would be much easier with opposable thumbs! And intuitive ideas are completely a cat's domain!

(1) I assume people feel as deeply as I do and are just as emotional, which doesn't help me explain to them what I am feeling because they haven't experienced the feeling I am experiencing. I think the best example I can thing of comes down to food. Some many people eat crap food - just read the label (it's filled with man-made chemicals). Their level of care about what they put in their body is very strange to me.

(2) Women. I haven't found one to date or marry that doesn't already have a boyfriend or husband. Almost all the women I approach have boyfriends. My approach is usually really bad too. How people get dates with others is way over my head.

Weird! I could have sworn I replied to you!

Anyway, I never managed to date. I would be too scared to ask anyone out! I always had friends that gradually morphed into something more...

I have had trouble even making friends with women because I haven't dealt with my past. So much to do!

After 15 years working in the telecommunications industry, I have developed an intricate knowledge of how a lot of the back end stuff works and with close to half of that time dealing with the transfer of numbers between networks, I almost instinctively know which number ranges are native to which mobile carrier. I have a tendency to assume other people in the organisation have the same level of knowledge....

I also seem to be one of very few drivers in Hobart, Tasmania that knows to correctly use an indicator whilst driving!!!

Haha, I'm sure they know who to ask though! I've made it a valid entry with the upvote, but I'm not sure if you answered the second part (what you don't know, that others appear to).

Whoops. I completely missed that part. I guess I'd have to say I have no clue about iPhones. For someone who has worked in the industry so long, I have successfully avoided using these devices so know very little about them.

Ha ha me too! I'm a complete tech nerd, but give me a Mac or an iPhone and I'm completely useless! Everything seems completely opposite to what I expect... But other people swear by them...

This is a really hard question!

I think the thing that I know that I can't understand how so few other people seem to get is how, living in LA, why people get so friggin' worked up about traffic when it's not a big deal at all. They're choosing to be mad for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Like, seriously, you chose to live here, traffic exists, and it's fine. Chill out and enjoy your music or podcast or whatever. It's not worth making everyone else miserable by cutting people off and being a rude asshole. I have friends who religiously do yoga and meditate and think they're Buddhist or whatever, and they completely flip out in traffic and start screaming at everyone. Why?!

What I don't get is what is so interesting about the Kardashians.

Wow, LA sounds like a crazy place! I only had an experience with the airport whilst transiting through to Canada... lets just say, I will avoid doing that again!

Kardashians... you and me....no idea!

For the first part," Tell me what is that you know that you thought everyone knew!" I would say that there is a distinct difference between "legal" and "lawful".

For the second part, "And what is it that everyone seems to know that you just can't do or wrap your head around?" I would say that seems to be there is no difference between "legal" and "lawful" in everyone' s minds.

Ummmmm... What is the difference between legal and lawful? I thought they were the same!

I will give you an example to explain. In the USA according to law the only "lawful" money is gold and silver coins, that is the law. However the USA no longer has "money" in circulation , all the gold money was confiscated by the government in 1933 and silver has also been phased out over time.
But in 1933 the people still needed a way to pay for goods and services and having no lawful money made it impossible to do so the government created what is known today as "Federal Reserve Notes" that are issued by the central bank to replace the money. It is a form of currency, which is a medium of exchange and again, it is not lawful money.
So the government then said the federal reserve notes are "legal tender" and that they are good for all debts public and private so they must be accepted as payment for all debts.
So lawful means exactly that, in accordance to the law. Legal on the other hand means what is generally accept as good or okay with the society but does not comply with written law.
Some people might consider that to be "splitting hairs" but the facts are the facts. There are plenty of things that are considered "legal" but do not meet the standard as set by the law. The more people accept these types of things the more lawless our society becomes, government is really good at circumventing the law and replacing things with "legal" in their place. It is how they end up in total control of the people because people don't pay enough attention to the meanings of words.
Personally, I would much rather have gold and silver in my pockets than pieces of paper that have nothing backing the value of them.

Huh, thanks for the explanation! I'm not sure I would prefer precious metals in my pocket, there is a certain convenience with cash... But I do appreciate the difference.

With the price of gold you wouldn't have to carry around but probably one coin since gold is over $1,000 an ounce and $20 gold coin back then was right at a ounce of gold I think, it might have weighed even more, but you surely would need many in your pocket for normal day to day living.

I get that, but how would you do fractions of the gold? I guess with less precious metals. Then my other question, which is how to deal with the limited supply of gold and the greater demand for it (as an increasing number of people will want to use it, just by normal population growth)? The price of gold will appreciate, leading to possibly uncontrollable inflation, or continuing subdivision of the 'gold coin unit'?

PS : apologies for the questions but it is a new idea for me!

Here in the USA four metals were used, gold , silver , nickel, and copper. The nickle and copper took care of the 5 cents and 1 cent transactions or in making change. The 10, 25, 50 cent coins were all made of silver and so were the $1 coins. Gold was the higher denomination $'s coins.
Paper "money" led to inflation and devaluation of the dollar, the US dollar has lost 97% of it's purchasing power since 1933 according to reports I have read from this year. So it would seem that without substance behind the "money" is a bigger problem than scarcity would be. You could still have electronic transactions or credit cards but settlement of the accounts would have to take place by the physical transfer of the coin money, so one trip to the bank a month would be required if you had any financial transactions.
There is a lot more that would be required in explaining the history and it would be very lengthy but I believe we would have far less financial problems in the world today had gold and silver been kept as the standard for the dollar. It was the banks that caused the initial problems when it came right down to it, and then they were ultimately the ones who ended up profiting the most from the problem they created.
It would be like a town that had only one auto body repair shop, and the owner of the shop would go out in a old beat up car at night crashing into parked cars and causing damage to them, he knows he will have plenty of business the next weeks to come.
The banks were and are no different than the body shop owner.

Thanks for the replies. I will go and read more about it. Although, it would appear (at first glance) difficult to attribute a root cause easily (due to so many complicating factors) to the adverse affects of inflation on purchasing power. Anyway, thanks for sparking my interest!

I thought I would give this a go... I don't feel I'm a master at anything, but working in customer service for most of my life on various ends there have been a few things that come to mind.

Since this is a 'technology' based system, we'll go with internet services and slow computers. I spent 8 years working from what was considered a 'mom&pop' type company being sold 2 in 6 years to end up with one of the 'top' cable companies in the country.

What I still cannot get my head around is how people think that their computer runs slow due to the internet. When I actuality it is usually because the user does not maintain their computer. The never seem to realized there are these things called cookies that download on your computer and that each time you access an internet page your computer has to go through all of those cookies to find the right ones needed.

The other thought I have with that is 'Your internet put viruses on my computer!!' We'll just let that thought sit there LOL

Ha, Yes I struggle alot with people blaming computers and the internet before user error! Ram bloat (need to reboot occasionally!) and leakage is another common one...

I guess there is a level of abstraction with dealing with computers and the Internet that people find difficult to grasp... I can't believe how many times I have to explain how cloud infrastructure works...

I used to describe everything like a pipeline and frequency levels. The idea that so many people think a computer is plug 'n play and you never have to do anything to it.

I guess I have that attitude with our car... Just drive it and only do forced maintenance!

  1. What do you know that you think other people know, but they generally don't?

how to drive. I see more accidents that should never happen. You add in snow and it's a free for all

2 What do you do badly, that everyone else seems to find easy?

Posting, formatting etc. it takes me so lone and some people put such nice formatted post together

thanks maybe we can get a little more exposure to this contest :)

So many accidents happen from people just wanting to get somewhere in a hurry. Leave earlier and just go easy! Going fast and driving crazy doesn't gain much time and just lows everyone else down!

I also see some really nicely formatted posts from other people, I have to learn how to make the pictures smaller and to the side of the text...

In the information-library there is "the ultimate mark down steemit guide" I have been using the information from it. It has the pull right or left command for putting the picture on one side and text on the other plus other commands

Everyone in a rush to get where they need to go as if it will not be there when they get there

Perfect, thanks! I will have to read it!

First of all, thank you very much for the SBI share, @bengy!

I am very grateful for these posts that help each of us to reflect and look inside.

Here my thoughts:

  • I thought everyone knew that 𝗅𝗂𝖿𝖾 𝗂𝗌n't 𝖺 𝗐𝖺𝗋 but 𝖺 𝖦𝖺𝗆𝖾, 𝗐𝗁𝖾𝗋𝖾 𝗐𝗁𝖺𝗍 𝗒𝗈𝗎 𝖦𝗂𝗏𝖾 𝗒𝗈𝗎 𝖱𝖾𝖼𝖾𝗂𝗏e.

  • What I can't seem to get my head around is why most of us are living completely distant from reality, from what it really is.

A friendly hug to all from @amico! ;)

No problem! Thanks for coming back!

That is really interesting, a war does imply that it is just a struggle to get ahead, whatever the cost. Whereas a game is about the fun of playing! That is an interesting way to look at it.

Hard to say about reality! We all perceive it differently, and yet we all think we have the real one!

I tought everyone knew that you can't recover steemit password

And I just can't wrap around my head how steemit.com makes money without ads

Only the Master password is unrecoverable... and I'm sure they have a whole pile of tokens which they can feed from!
