STEEM PLANTS CONTEST Week 4 - A Superhero Plant?

in #steemplants10 months ago (edited)

Good day Steemians. I just recently found out about this exciting contest initiated by @knopka145 and immediately decided to join it. You can check out the link to know more about this. Click here. Interested participants are to write a post about a plant that he or she has at home, with a friend, at work, or have seen once on vacation. It can be written in any language. It must be original and the photos taken by the participants themselves. And so without further ado here is my plant for this week's contest.

My plant of choice is called Spider Plant. If you wonder why I called it a superhero plant it is because the name is the same as the Marvel superhero Spiderman.

But kidding aside the spider plant is so named because of its spider-like plants, or spiderettes, which dangle down from the mother plant like spiders on a web. This plant has grown in popularity just like his namesake in the Marvel world because apparently it does have powers of its own. Really? Yes, really. The spider plant has the ability to produce oxygen while at the same time purify the air around either at the home or office. It also is a detoxifying agent absorbing various chemicals that can cause different kinds of illnesses and afflictions. Chemicals such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and xylene which cause headaches, dizziness, eye irritation and more.

Photo above is one of the many spider plants we have. We have not yet placed them inside the house as we still have to make room for them. So in the meantime they are hung at our lanai as this plant does not want direct exposure to sunlight. Just bright indirect light will do.

Do you know the spider plant is one of 10 plants recommended by NASA to be grown inside the home based on a study they conducted in the late '80's called The Clean Air Study. In this study it recommended having at least one of any of these plants for every 100 square feet of room space to eliminate these chemicals and have fresh, clean and air rich in oxygen. Click on the link here to know more about this study.

It is also quite easy to grow. They are very sturdy. And even if they are exposed to direct sunlight for a long time they don't get affected except for some scorching of their leaves which can be removed without affecting the plant. Here are some pictures of our little ones which were taken from the mother plants.

Another look at one of the mother plants.

That's it for this post. I hope you all learned a little bit about this superhero plant. They're healthy and what's nice about them is they are really low maintenance plants. Until next week stay safe.
