Steemit Sandwich Contest Week #25 - Ground Beef Stroganoff Vetkoek

in #steemitsandwichcontest6 years ago (edited)

Well I think you could have knocked me over with a feather last week when I saw that my Spicy Steemit Bunny Chow actually took the SSC trophy, really did not see that one coming, so a huge thank you to @jaybird, wish he could have tasted it though!
Week #25 is nearing closing time so I'd better get my act together; have decided to stay local, and introduce Steemit to a proudly South African staple called 'Vetkoek' - direct translation 'Fat Cake'. If you like Donuts, you certainly will enjoy Vetkoek :)

Delicious Vetkoek filled with Ground Beef Stroganoff

As a little girl I used to believe the inventor of Vetkoek was my mother as she would magically make this when there was no bread in the house, but of course it goes back much further here in South Africa, to the days of the Voortrekkers who found it much easier frying bread dough than having to make a fire and makeshift oven.
Nowadays, one can find Vetkoek shops all over South Africa and buy them either plain, filled with savory or curried ground Beef or Apricot Jam/ Jelly for those with a sweet tooth.
According to Wikipedia, similar versions are found in other countries as well; the Dutch have ‘Oliebollen’, Mexicans have ‘Sopapillas” & in the Caribbean they’re called ‘Johnny Cake’ – now I wonder who Johnny was?
Stick to @jaybird's brief now Lizelle, and don't be sidetracked!
Just one more story; Mom would gift friends with a loaf of freshly baked bread and they thought it was pure heaven. My 4 brothers on the other hand, used to run to the corner cafe and buy a half loaf of mass produced bread with their pocket money as a treat!
We are a weird bunch us humans, always thinking the grass is greener on the other side!
The ingredients for my Ground Beef Stroganoff Vetkoek

Wheat Flour, Salt (I used Magwenya Flour, a special blend which makes the dough rise faster), Yeast, Sunflower Oil, Ground Beef, 1 Onion, 1 clove Garlic, Mushrooms, Beef Stroganoff Dry Cooking Sauce, my cheat ingredient when I'm in a hurry

Make up the bread dough in the usual fashion with lukewarm water and leave it to prove.
Or run out to your local bakery and buy a bag of their dough :)

For the dough proving, I improvised by placing it in a proudly South African invention called the Wonderbag, should work well although it was not designed for that purpose.
Note the Wonderbag is normally used as a kind of non- electric and non- gas slow cooker. Stews, soup or dry beans or other legumes are cooked for about half an hour on the stove top and then transferred to the Wonderbag and left to do its' magic while you go to work or out to play.

The dough is kept warm and cosy inside the Wonderbag.

My dough has more than doubled & is ready for deep frying.

Dip a tablespoon in oil, scoop out a generous piece of dough and deep fry in hot oil.

Now for the delicious creamy Ground Beef Stroganoff filling

Stir fry onions, garlic, mushrooms & ground beef in a little oil.

Add about a three quarter cup of milk and the Beef Stroganoff dry cooking sauce and cook till filling thickens.

Cut your Vetkoek in half, scoop out a little of the dough to make space for the filling.

A very apt sign for the SSC community greeted me last week when I visited a local farmer's market.

Thanks @artywink, we also had not eaten vetkoek in ages, was yummy indeed :)

ahaha, I love that Sign! Good find!

Excellent creation as usual.. I've never heard of this "fat cake," however, I do like the sounds of it. You've introduced a lot of distinctive sandwiches and foods to SSC over the past few weeks, so thx for that!

Great play by play and over all pres on this one!

Thanks @jaybird, hubby is not complaining about all the sandwiches, except for the expanding waistline :)
I'd actually been thinking about which sandwich I could dish up this week when I bumped into that sign, was so weird!
