#SteemitIsToMe

Yesterday, @lukestokes posted advice targeted at new Steemians who have asked him for tips regarding how to become a successful Steemit blogger.

He pointed to three blog posts he created, which also happen to represent the three things Steemit means to him: Relationships, reputation and rewards.

At the end of the post, he suggested that other people define what Steemit means to them, using the hashtag: #SteemitIsToMe.

I love this concept, because Steemit has meant different things to me at different times. Pessimists may choose to point out some of the negative aspects of this blogging website: drama-filled, slow, unreliable, still in beta, etc. I'm not saying I haven't had moments of frustration, but overall, the positives have significantly outweighed the negatives.

Like Luke, there are three themes that come to mind when I think about the question: What does Steemit mean to me?

1 - A gateway drug into cryptocurrencies

If it weren't for Steemit, I probably wouldn't know anything about cryptocurrencies.

Steem was the first cryptocurrency I owned, and I was able to earn it by doing something I'm passionate about: writing. This platform inspired me to learn more about blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies in a couple of different ways. My ability to earn Steem/SBD made me curious about what could be done with this new form of digital currency that I had, and it made me wonder what the purposes of other cryptocurrencies were. As a reader on Steemit, many posts referenced things that were happening with cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, so naturally I began to learn more by simply consuming information on this site.

Many of my friends/family also know very little about cryptocurrencies; therefore, Steemit is a natural place to lead them to so they can get their feet wet in this space, the same way I did.

2 - A place to be creative

I had a high school English teacher who walked into class one day and handed each student a blank piece of paper. Once he had finished handing them out, he said, "Your assignment is to write whatever you want on that piece of paper. If you write something, you will be given 100 per cent. If your paper is completely blank, you fail. It's due tomorrow." A bunch of students laughed and couldn't believe their luck. Many wrote one word on their piece of paper, tucked it in their binder and smiled knowing they'd get 100 per cent on this assignment. Others were a bit more cheeky and chose to write swear words, defending their decision with, "He said we could write anything!" I took that piece of paper home and spent hours writing a fictional short story. When I was done, it was better than anything I had previously written in my life. This unorthodox assignment led me to tap into my creativity and discover one of my true passions.

Every time I click the Steemit "Post" button, I am given the metaphoric blank piece of paper that my high school English teacher handed me more than a decade ago. I am given the opportunity to put my creativity to work, and share my thoughts with an audience. This is a place where I've shared chapters of the first novel I ever wrote. This is a place where I've posted some of my best short stories. This is a place where I've developed an interview series that has featured 800 questions with 40 influential people.

Some could argue that a blank Microsoft Word document, or a Medium account offer me the same possibilities; however, the reward structure Steemit leverages acts as a motivating factor that pushes me to dedicate time and effort toward blogging on this website.

3 - A community of unique, talented people

In July 2016, I began blogging on Steemit and digitally networking with mysterious usernames who I knew nothing about other than the information they voluntarily shared on their blogs. My 20 questions series allowed me to learn a bit more about some of these individuals, but it wasn't until the inaugural SteemFest that I actually had the chance to put faces to names and connect with this community on another level.

Steemit can be a place where you log on, write a blog post, and then leave. But I would argue by using Steemit this way, you're not getting the full benefit of what Steemit (and the larger Steem ecosystem) has to offer. Each username is a real person with unique ideas and value to bring to the table. Steemit is a place where those individuals can interact, share ideas, comment, educate, inform and even entertain.

Although I didn't make it to the latest SteemFest, I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to meet some of this community in person. Because of that experience, when I think of Steemit, I think of more than a website.

There you have it, those three elements make up what Steemit means to me.

Now it's your turn. What does Steemit mean to you? Use the hashtag #SteemItIsToMe.

Let's grow this conversation.

Oh, this is awesome! Very well done. I completely agree with every one of the points you made. Many are learning about cryptocurrency through this site, and I love the blank page analogy. As for the community... ah, I love that the most. Resteeming. Thanks for spreading this tag beyond myself.

The community is my favorite part too! I'm very impressed by the amazing connections I've made already even though I just got started! Very excited for the future!

Hopefully a few others take this hashtag and run with it... I think it's a great idea to reflect on our experience with Steemit so far. There are a lot of things that can be improved, but it's nice to remind ourselves what brought us here... and what's keeping us here.

BRAVO!!! Fantastic post. Since I just started on Steemit this weekend this post is a great inspiration to keep going. Steemit has been one of the most welcoming communities I've ever seen and it is great to know how others have been applying it daily. Maybe soon I'll do a post like this of my very own.

Welcome to the platform!

Stick with it. It takes time to get your feel for the website, but it really is a great community and a unique concept. (And yes, it'd be great to see a #SteemitIsToMe post from someone who is brand new here for a fresh perspective.)

Found this through @Lukestokes resteem. Great write up! I can totally relate to many things you shared: getting your feet wet with crypto, an incentive to push yourself with writing, and connecting to a community of those sharing your interests (and more experienced).

Because of all these other benefits of Steemit that aren't apparent at first, I've actually been slacking the past couple weeks when it comes to posting content. I've been busy chatting on a Discord channel with a very strong Steem based writing community. I've started sculpting, working on a pretty big project that I'll be posting about in the future. My writing time is being spent on a beer series for December...

All the creative projects I'm working on now and people I've connected with I never would have anticipated when I first signed up here. It's been a lot of fun so far, and exciting to be a member in the early stages.

Perhaps I should add a #SteemItIsToMe post to the top of my project queue. :)

Awesome! Thanks for checking out this post and thanks for your comment.

It's encouraging to hear that you've gotten involved with so many creative projects and connected with like-minded people who are doing the same.

Following you in hopes of catching your #SteemitIsToMe post and December beer series :)

This is a great post--very insightful. I like steemit because there's so many different groups of people I can interact with. I've connected with

  • silver and gold bugs who post in #steemsilvergold
  • chartists / technical analysts who do detailed reports on crypto and market performance
  • Yoga practitioners
  • Runners
  • Photographers
  • Anarchists
  • Libertarians

The list goes on and on.

I also like that I can find news about upcoming events in the crypto world which cannot be found anywhere else (thanks to the hard work of crypto enthusiasts and witnesses like Luke and many others).

Steemit has also provided a means of earning STEEM in addition to what I've invested here and it's nice to claim my rewards and see my account grow over time. I feel like I've gotten into something great on the ground floor even though I didn't show up here until July 2017. I think everyone here now could be considered early adopters / users and I suspect those of use who hold a decent amount of STEEM will reap great financial rewards in the future. But that's not the only reason I'm here....I enjoy the interaction part just as much as I do earning and watching my account grow.

It's fantastic to hear that you've been able to connect with a bunch of different people who seem to have similar interests as you. And I agree, we are all early adopters for sure.

Wow it amazing.. work fraind...

Good job explaining what Steemit means to you. I, too, enjoy the community and I'm amazed at how interesting it is to learn about cryptocurrency.

Thanks for checking this post out! The community seems to be a big reason why a lot of people stick around!

I am so glad you wrote this post. Your reasons for being here are identical to mine. You just said it with so much more finesse! Well done! 🐓🐓

Thanks a lot for the kind words!

Very cool blog, by the way. The Chicken Gazette - love the niche topics/experts that are emerging on this platform.

Thanks for stopping by. Your words are inspiration for @mother2chicks🐓🐓

Totally agree with your three main points. Point 1 is my favorite as I have learned more from others regarding crypto. What could be made better is if steemit had a better search function.

There is no question that there are areas that can be improved on Steemit; however, this place is incredibly unique and the concept is cutting-edge. And yes, if it weren't for Steemit, I probably wouldn't have a clue what "cryptocurrency" even means.

People here are really unique, it's true. I have never met so many thoughtful and talented participants in the community. And the platform really gives unlimited space for creativity. The persistence in combination with creativity give pay)

Agreed - there is some serious talent behind the Steemian usernames.

Beautifully written. Makes me think about what Steemit means to me. The first would be creative and collaborative opportunities, as for the others I will need to give it a bit more thought.

Thanks :)

Creativity and collaboration are definitely huge parts of Steemit. I think you should do a post using this tag after you've given it some more thought!
