it's usually grease that clogs pipes, or at least bind the materials together that is making the clog.. so using soap will dissolve the grease and often loose the clog up enough to make it run smoothly again. Obviously, getting rid of clogs without using chemicals is to be preferred but soap can do in a pinch like you found out :)
