During the Spanish colonial period, some ancient Mayans lived in the highlands near the Gulf of Mexico. Mayans were group of American Indians and were said to be peace loving and religious people.

A gentleman named George, together with his son, Andrey, also settled in the highlands for many reasons. The place was protected by difficult terrains, volcanoes and tropical rainforests. It was also a quiet place where he can do his research and experiments. Although George and Andrey were of the few elite groups, living in the forest was not a big deal because they were both nature lovers. Even the wild animals in the forest seemed to feel that they were not enemies. Different species of birds perched on trees near their tents and mountain goats just played around them.

One day, George had to look for some materials he needed for his research.  Andrey was left in the tent. At fifteen Andrey was just like his father. He was so full of enthusiasm in discovering something for the future generation. When George left the tent, Andrey thought what to prioritize regarding his plans for that day. Finally, he decided to explore the forest. Andrey prepared his backpack  and a bladed weapon. Small monkeys, one of which was white ran to follow him.

After three hours of walking, the monkeys jumped up a huge stone as if inviting him to rest. He ate the cookies and fruits he brought and gave some to the monkeys. Then, Andrey told the monkeys to go to the nearby spring to drink because the water he brought was not enough for them. While waiting for the monkeys to come back, he noticed that the stone where he sat on had inscriptions that he does not recognize. When the monkeys returned, he pointed out the signs on the stone. The monkeys started to use their sense of smell to know if there was something hidden around the stone.

About two meters from the stone, the white monkey began to scratch the soil between the two big roots of a tree. Some monkeys pulled the hem of his pants as if urging him to help in digging. So he cut a branch of a hardwood, sharpened it and started digging. The soil was soft and sandy and after digging less than one foot, the hardwood struck a metal.

It was a rectangular metal box approximately ten inches wide, eighteen inches long, and ten inches high. Andrey lifted up the box and said, "If this box is given to me for good, then this box can be opened easily, however, if this is not for me, this box will remain closed and we will have to bury this again." Andrey tried to open the box. A little effort was exerted and the box was opened. Inside were barrels of gold about one inch in diameter!

The monkeys returned the soil in the hole and they went back to Andrey's tent. When George arrived the monkeys were still there and he shared the food he brought to the monkeys who accompanied his son. He told his son that he need considerable amount for his research and the experimental project. Just then, Andrey told his father about what happened when he left.

Andrey delightedly showed his father the gold bars he found with his friends. George was so happy and told his son and the monkeys that the gold bars will be used to finance his research and experimental project for the good of the future generation. George and Andrey were convinced that the gold bars were placed by their gods for people like them so that the next generation will enjoy a much better life in the future.

I hope you enjoyed the story.
