Thinking & Communicating In Positive Ways (Day 20 of 30 of the Happiness Challenge)

Some people are really good at seeing the positive in every situation and conveying that to you. Hopefully, you have friends, family, bosses, co-workers, acquaintances or teachers who can see the silver lining even when the situation is a complete mess. They are able to tell you everything you have done right, even if the situation ends in complete failure.

They give you constructive criticism and are able to build you up and give you a confidence boost when the times are hard or the world lies shattered around your feet. They help you pick yourself up, fix things or start from scratch.

I’m sure you also know people who can’t give a compliment, without pointing every last shortcoming too. They tend to dwell on the negative and are hard to work with, or indeed live with.

Which Type Are You?

The question you need to ask yourself is which person are you?

How do you communicate your thoughts?

If becoming happier is your goal, then it would be wise to consider thinking and communicating in a positive way.

Why is thinking so important?

Because its how we communicate with ourselves. Most up would prefer to hang out with cheerleaders, rather than the critic of our nightmares and we are the person we spend the most time with, so that makes sense that we become our own biggest cheerleader. Often the case is that we are our own worse critic.

Here is the good news...

How you think can be both learned and unlearned, so if you think (or know) you are a pessimist, you can learn to be, think and act in a more positive way.

Of course, it won’t be as easy as snapping your fingers, but a plan you could follow is this…

The Ultra Versatile 3 Step Plan

Step 1: You have to want to change

Step 2: Learn to catch or identify your behavior when it happens, Take a back seat and listen to the thoughts that are happening in your head, stop and make yourself think before you speak.

Step 3: Practice then new habit or behavior.

That is how you learn and unlearn new patterns of behavior in anything.

Over to You...

So take a few moments to see how you did today and reflect on how you think others might have perceived you, or what you have been like towards yourself internally?

Here you are positive as you would like to be, or is there room for improvement?

If there is room for improvement, keep doing the three-step plan until you have this positive way of communicating down.

Bear in mind, the way you talk to yourself is of utmost importance too, as sometimes its easy to be nice to others, but we are too harsh on ourselves.
