Speech Therapy

I had written about my speech problem in my past article.

My speech problem stayed with me even in my teenage years since there was no intervention done.

I started imitating the newscasters from the radio and tried to articulate their pronunciation.

It took me about half a year on my own without the knowledge that there was speech therapy that could have helped me.

My second son had speech difficulties when he was young.

There was early intervention but it was rather costly.

A simple speech therapy can easily cost few hundred dollars monthly and it was considered quite a lot of money then.

With the improvement of technology where everyone has internet at home, we can attempt to have some intervention done on our own at home if money is really a concern.

I have gathered some videoclips for your reference and you can find more to suit your child’s needs.

Speech Therapy -Alphabet

Let the child see the shape of the mouth when each letter is being pronounced and use a mirror to see their own mouth shape can be one option.

We may not want to introduce too many letters but progressively introduce a few letters each time until the child is comfortable.

Speech Therapy Song ABC

Margie La Bella intentionally sings slowly to provide clear articulation to allow children with speech difficulties to take their time to follow.

Daily reinforcement through song is a fun way since most children do enjoy music and they can learn quite effortlessly while attempting to sing along.

Explore other speech therapy songs if you really find songs can relate to your child well.

Early speech therapy session with toddler

In simple, speech therapy can be conducted through play.

Let the toddler enjoy the therapy session through playing with a ball to start building simple words.

Speech therapy using play dough.

Speech therapy techniques using imitation and action with words through playing play dough.

Learning can be as natural as possible to make it effortless for the child.

Let the child touch, feel and imitate through play.

In conclusion

Speech difficulty can cause a child to have low self-esteem and confidence to attempt to speak.

My second son did not have a good time with his speech therapy since it was not done through play and he was made to sit and learn.

Getting them to improve their speech through fun and play can be a lot more enjoyable without them knowing that they are getting help.

Build their confidence and self-esteem as every child can learn but not every child learn the same way and have the same progression.

All children deserve a happy childhood even if they have learning difficulties.
