Nurture the filial child

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

In modern society, we are becoming more self-centred and our own benefit is more important than our own parents.

We are concerned with our own needs more than the needs of our parents.

Does being filial come naturally?

In this short article, I will discuss some ideas about how to nurture children to be filial.

You can have better ways that you can share in the comment as a reply to this article.

Understand the heart of a parent

Most parents are willing to give to their children a lot more than they can afford.

They want to give the best to their children.

Through stories, we can ignite the heart of gratitude for their parents leading to being filial to their parents in future.

The below is a nice example of how a parent sacrifice for a child secretly.

Stories of filial children

We can also share stories to illustrate what it means to be the filial child.

Through inspirational stories of how children show their love to their parents in the things that they do, children can learn from other children this good characteristic of being filial from young.

The below is an inspirational story of how a 13-yearold boy took care of his mother who had a stroke resulting in physical disability.

Role model as parents

Young children like to imitate what their parents do.

The fact is how we want to be treated is how we should treat our own parents.

As our children see the different ways we show our gratitude to our parents, they will grow up with such values naturally without being forced to do so.

Some ideas that we may have forgotten to do for our parents:

  • Visit our parents regularly.

  • Give monthly allowance even if we don’t stay with our parents.

  • Buy gifts for our parents for special occasion like their birthdays and Christmas.

  • Bring our parents out for a meal.

  • Buy a tour package for our parents as appreciation to them.

There are many things we can do for our own parents that our children can see and learn without being told to do so.

The fact is we should be doing those things as children of our own parents even if our parents did not do it for our grandparents.

We should not do it just to show our children but we need to do it from our heart of gratitude for our own parents.

In conclusion

Good values can be nurtured in children.

The way that our children grow up to become can be due to our own influence as parents.

In school, character education can play a role but the major influence comes directly through parents.

Teachers can help but there is a limit to how much influence we can have.

By cultivating the right mindset and values, our children can have their own children with same good values in future.
