OPEN SOURCE CURRICULUM SERIES: ROBOTICS FOR KIDS LESSON PLAN NUMBER #9 - WAR TANK

in #steemiteducation7 years ago

While we do not teach violence in schools, weapons and war equipment are spectacular in form and power. Kids love the idea that they have control and power over something and it gives them self-confidence. The war tank is one arsenal in battles that represents invincibility (up to a point) and power in the midst of combat.

Objectives

After this lesson, the students will:

  1. Understand design intricacies and design structures.
  2. Be able to create a war tank with motor and remote control.
  3. Be aware about war and violence and how to deal with the results.
  4. <<< add your own objectives here >>>

Enduring Understanding

The world has been shaped by war and violence in ways unimaginable to humans. War has not done any good to humanity and will never be a solution to problems of conflicts. A better world would be a place where people love one another despite the differences in race, color, or faith.

Essential Questions

  1. Why is there war?
  2. Who is responsible for the war in the world?
  3. How does war help nations in solving their conflicts?

STEM APPLICATION

SCIENCE

The war tanks are “indestructible” monsters of war that are designed to dodge bullets and bigger calibre of guns. They are designed to destroy a target with just one shot. Armed with big guns and protected with thick impenetrable armor, the tanks are well suited for frontline battles.

Discuss with kids how tanks are built with materials that make them indestructible and how they are armed with super big guns which can destroy a house with just one shot.

ENGINEERING

Most tanks run slow because of the nature of its design and the materials and components used to build it.

As students design their robotic tank using the kit, remind them that tanks are not build for speed but for strength and robustness.

MATH

The design of tanks that make them strong requires mathematical calculations in terms of material strength, balance of speed and stability, and even aerodynamics.

Give them examples of objects or other vehicle that run slow due to the nature of its design, like a farm tractor.

Tickle their minds why a super jet plane can travel fast when it is so much heavier than the war tank.

VOCABULARY

Terms to Know. Have students learn the following terms, find the definitions, using them in a sentence, determining the antonym of the terms, and other ways that the students will get to use the words. Real-world application is preferred. Add more words if necessary, according to your own students' needs.

VALUES EDUCATION

Conflicts often results to violence and war. However, when conflicts are faced head-on with cool heads, reasonable solutions, and sometimes, compromise the world will not have to suffer the violence of war and the horrifying after effect of it.

Children must understand that resolving conflicts may be done in a democratic way where everyone is given “fair” treatment. Violence is never the answer for anything.

This is really great (just like all the other plans on this series)! :D

It could be combined with a history lesson, if you're looking into a war period, show them a proper related film, have a discussion in class and let the children reflect upon the causes and effects of war. Then you could move on to the STEM project.

If you'd like to take it even further, since war is a reality in the world, you can make a complementary project on organisations that protect war victims.

(There, we now have art, STEM, ethics and life - a full approach on war)

Those are great suggestions. War is right on history lessons. Thanks for these inputs ;-)

How many times have I thanked you for the lesson plan? Probably the 9th. :)

"Thank you's" are more than enough for me. And thanks for following this series ;-)

Great post really like it..... thanks for sharing upvoted!!

@cjclaro Yes really good post. Followed

nice post cjclaro :)
I am sorry, just now can comment ok .. :)

Great. Upvoted and Resteemed.

Excelentes series. Una planificación muy bien organizada. Felicidades

Hi, @cjclaro. Your post is very good.
