Today we will learn how to find the Subjects and Object of a sentence and then we will have some fun with recipes and baking our own cookies by reading and following instructions.

Subject and object

If we talk about a 'subject' it means the topic, what it is about, now in the same way we say that the subject of a sentence is the person or the thing the the sentence is about, the person or thing that does something.

For example:  The man sits in the garden.  (If you ask the question 'Who sits in the garden', your answer is going to be 'The man' - that is the Subject of the sentence.)

The object of the sentence will follow after the verb and will answer the question 'who or what'.  This is the person or the thing the action is done to.

For example:  The man eats the apple.  (What does he eat? - the apple - that is the object of the sentence)

  • Read the following sentences and circle the verb (doing word) and determine which words are the subject and which ones are the object
  1. The mother boils the water.
  2. She ate the cake.
  3. He burnt the biscuits
  4. I like ice cream.
  5. My mother made us some food.
  6. I love to eat cookies.
  7. Peter is a hungry boy.
  8. The pizza is cheese and tomato.
  • Write 5 of your own sentences that has a subject and an object.  Try and make interesting sentences and check your spelling.

Writing my own recipe

A recipe gives us instructions on how to prepare something - the instructions must be written in the correct order and sometimes they number the steps so it it easy to follow.

For example:

How to boil an egg

  1. Put the eggs you want to boil in a pot.
  2. Cover the eggs with water.
  3. Turn on the stove and put the pot on the stove.
  4. If the water starts boiling, keep it boiling for 4 minutes.
  5. Turn off the heat and remove the pot.
  6. The eggs are now ready to eat.
  • You are going to write your own recipe.  You can either use a recipe from a recipe book and re-write it in your own words or you can 'invent' a recipe.
  1. You need to have a list of ingredients.
  2. First write a rough draft of your recipe
  3. Check if you have the following - a name for your dish, the ingredients, the corrects steps to follow and if their are unknown words or difficult words, did you explain it?
  4. Write your recipe out neatly
  5. Try out your recipe if you want to.
  • For fun you can watch the video on 'The gingerbread man' and can even try and bake your own.  Here is a recipe.  Enjoy making it.
