It is the longest river in the world.  You will find part of it in Egypt and 9 other countries and the banks of the Nile river flood from time to time and leaves very fertile ground behind which is good for the farmers planting crops there.

  1. How long is this river?
  2. Through how many countries does this river run?
  3. Why did the Egyptians live close to the banks of the river?
  4. What is the ancient name of the Nile?

The Nile is about 6650 km long and it is the longest river known to man.

Located in Africa, the Nile River lies in the following countries: Kenya, Eritrea, Congo, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.

Luxor and Cairo, two cities in Egypt, are located next to the Nile - these city started here and grew next to the river, because the river gives water, recreation and fertile ground for farmers.  You can find more information on the importance of the Nile here.

In 2004 there was an expedition party that went the whole length of the Nile from the source (where it stars) to the sea.  They started in Uganda and finished in  Rosetta and it took 4 and a half months to complete this expedition.

About half of the population of Egypt, which is around 40 million, lives in the Nile Delta.

The Nile Delta in Northern Egypt is where the Nile River drains in to the Mediterranean Sea. It is around 160 kilometres (100 miles) in length and spreads out over 240 kilometres (149 miles) of coastline. It is rich in agriculture and has been farmed for thousands of years.

A very important discovery were made in the Nile Delta in 1787 - the Rosetta Stone.  This is an Egyptian artifact and it played a role in understanding the hieroglyphics (writing) of the ancient Egyptians.  Read more about this discovery here.
