Carat
In 1907, the carat (or karat) began to be used by gem cutters as a unit of measure. It is also used to show that amount of pure gold in a mixture made of gold and other materials.
As a unit of weight for precious stones, the carat has been standardized by the US government at 200 milligrams (1/5 gram, 3.08647 grains in English measurement). A two-carat diamond thus weighs 400 milligrams or 2/5 of one gram. This weight, 200 milligrams, has been accepted by most leading governments of the world. In the other meaning of the word, the gold carat, sometimes spelled karat, stood for a 24th part of the weight of the gold marc. It now means just a 24th part and is used to state the proportion of gold in an alloy. Thus 14-carat gold contains 14/24ths of gold mixed with 10/24ths of some other metal, usually silver or copper.

The word carat originally came from a Greek word that referred to locust seeds, each weighing about 205 milligrams.
