There is a huge difference between respecting someone and being afraid of him.
Being afraid of someone (doesn’t matter the reason, maybe he is a Mafioso, a militiaman, etc.) not necessarily mean that you respect him it’s just about you trying to avoid any harm caused by him so you give him an attention.
On the other hand there are a lot of people that force you to respect them (in a good way) by being nice to others and helpful, polite and this kind of people will win at the end.
