Whats Tags

Analyse the tags of your followers

As part of the Steem-FOSSbot initiative, I present a new simple web app called What Tags. This app looks at a sample of posts from your followers to see what tags they most commonly use, and graphs these for ease of summary and understanding. Hopefully you gain some insights into your followers through this, although of course this is no replacement for actually reading their posts 😅

As Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), the source is available on GitHub and free to use for any purpose. However please do check the licenses of the included libraries if modifying.

The app can be accessed online at https://steem-fossbot.github.io/what-tags/ but you can download it and it will work right from you computer too.

Why do this?

This app was requested to no one in particular by @hexdek16 in this post. I thought, why not? 😇

Could someone create an app that lets you know the tags your followers use or view. In creating content here on Steemit, I'd like to think followers follow me because they want to see content I create or Resteem. Yet, as more and more people follow me I'm unable to know what content my followers follow.

What does it do?

The app looks at your followers up to a maximum of 1000. Note that not all these "followers" are actually following you, some of them are people who have muted you, i.e. anti-followed you 😂 (it's a quirk of the Steem API), so the actual maximum may be lower.

Then it takes the last 10 posts by default (but you can grab up to 50 or as little as 1) and looks at the tags used on those posts. These tags are collated in several ways.

We look at both total frequency (regardless of user) and by user usage (i.e. the number of users using a particular tag). These are displayed separately as bar charts, and then together in a bubble chart, with the bubble size proportional to the total frequency and the color proportional to the number of users using the tag, from pink (low number of users) to blue (high number).

For example, the larger pink bubbles mean that a small number of users (maybe just one) is using a tag. There is obviously an interaction between total frequency and number of users using a tag, so it's not surprising that the most used tags are also used by a lot of different people.

Edit: I forgot to mention, if you mouse over the bubbles, you'll get detailed information. Kind of important for the bubbles without text!

But... why?

@hexdek16 wanted to use it to find out "what content my followers follow". It is interesting to see what tags are popular in your followers.

For me it was purely a technical exercise and to do something nice for the community. 😄

If you any ideas for it, feel free to leave them as a comment or better yet, as a GitHub issue on the GitHub project page

Thanks @personz really cool app. I will be using it all the time.

An idea would be to extend this to analyze what followers vote on. I would be very interested to see what my followers like to vote on. Even restricted to a few days would be cool.

Good idea! 😄 👍 It could be it's own other project: What Votes, since like this one it could easily be a standalone webpage.

I've added it here to a new section I've created on GitHub to track project, including new idea. Feel to add more detail or what you'd like to see on it! Getting involved is the best way to see your idea come to life! 💯 ⭐️

Will do.
Great graphs by the way.

Thanks for doing it!

My pleasure! It's a fun project

This is great! Well done!

Nice of you to say, thanks :D
